The final devaluing of a once-great tournament has been brought about by the FA's callous scheduling of Prem games on the same day. What happened to the old days when FA Cup Final day was really special?

Way of the world I am afraid - the FA Cup might as well not exist for all the attention the Premiership bosses pay to it.

How nice though (just for one year maybe) to NOT have any of the usual top four suspects in it - Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool ...

The bigger clubs (esp Man U) have showed their contempt for this competition in the past. And if Fergie hadn't won it in 1990 he'd more than likely been down the road as well ... just shows memories are short.

You mean as opposed to a club that's spent nearly £400m to buy it's way into the Top 4 and the Final?

NORMALLY I'd be quite happy to congratulate the winners of the FA Cup.... However, I'm struggling to do so today knowing that the scorer of the winning goal earns £221,000 every week. frown

I'm consoling myself that despite ALL their money, City only beat Stoke by one goal.

end of the day the big spending has happened since the 70's.

from trevor francis, alan shearer, blackburn rovers, chelsea, portsmouth etc all had to spend to get the success.

The wages only exist at current levels because fans are willing to pay what they do for season tickets, replica shirts, tv subscriptions etc.

We're equally to blame.

That's not entirely true though is it? Because clubs like City are spending a lot more than they are generating from club income. The difference is being made up by wealthy individuals and debt.

That situation can't exist forever.

everyone's saying city are paying so and so. surely if you look at it even a rooney or an ashley young or carroll their wages are just as extortion.

everyone goes ooooh messi - but he's hardly on minimum wage. yet clubs like barca do sell that merchandise to supplement the wage

all these clubs spending big are obviously payin these wages knowing that they'll have to spend in accordance to their income.

the money is the reason the prem league is the best to watch. how much points is there between 2nd and 3rd compared to the spanish league?

i'd rather have this than that!

Of which approaching half goes to the taxman. Would you prefer the Sheikh spends his money in the UAE, or on players in the UK who pay high taxes and spend in the local economy?

I remember when the FA Cup final coverage started at about 9am, back when I were a lad and Malcolm Macdonald was my hero!
It was a special day back then, maybe we don't appreciate it so much now because big games are on TV all the time.

well the thread has wandered off topic a tad.......

yep i used to love watching the final, the build up seemed ednless and was great - back in the day.

In terms of the wages comments. Personaly i don't care a jot how much someone earns, IF the wages are being paid from income derived from the club. In terms of the tax that someone pays, no doubt they manage to find various loopholes to minimize that. Oh and as for Barca and Messi's wages......think you'll find that Barce's finaancial position isn't too clever either.

Hopefully sometime soon UEFA will carry out their plan of making sure that clubs are operating in a proper business like fashion. And perhaps the cash cow that has bought City will do a deal to buy the stadium rather than them just paying rent ( unless somethings changed that i have missed).

I'd rather that clubs spent what they earned, broadly, that's all. Central Government finance arrangements aren't really a justification for City buying the FA Cup this year.
