What's the deal? The vast majority of the athletes seem to be wearing them. Are they a particularly special model or something?

They were actually colour coded per function.

Pink : Speed
Blue: More control
Black: Traction and curling the ball more (free kick specialists)
Green: Strikers

Stud patterns on sole, as well as the surface of the boot were all designed with these elements in mind. Depending on the position of the player, the most appropriate boot was selected.
