Looking for recommendations.

Typically walk over mixed terrain such as gravel, rocks, mud etc.

Needs to be waterproof and breathable.

For some reason my footwear always seems to fail about 1/3 of the way back from the front. The upper usually splits.

"Approach shoe" is probably the term you want to look for.

Merrel MOAB are reasonable, available in fabric/goretex or leather. I'm currently in some Miendl leather ones, not goretex but waterpoof enough for wandering about on wet grass, think they do goretex version too.

If you're going to go somewhere wet or damp, my personal opinion is to go leather. I've never had particularly promising experience with fabric boots in the wet, no matter how much gore-tex they've used.

Other than that, finding a pair that fits is much more important than brand or model, there's no substitute for going into a shop and trying stuff on.

Agree with all of this.

Go to a shop, try as many pairs as you can, you’ll have your answer.

If you want reliably waterproof: all leather, with as little stitching as possible in the lower part of the boot. Keep them waxed – doesn’t have to be re-waxed that often.

My fave for Essex trails, Altberg Fremington. Come in male/female fitment and 5 widths.
