Rock Climbing

Hi

I'm interested in starting something new and have always fancied rock climbing but am a beginner. Would love some lessons, indoor or outdoor. Can anyone recommend anywhere in the midlands?

I did a climb once, up the Avon Gorge in Bristol.

Was toproped, but scared the living crap out of me. Nothing worse than the feeling that you can't make the next hold and your grip is running out in 10..9..8...

Climbers are mental.

I do, on occasion - don't have any equipment and don't have the time or funds to do it regularly,, sadly! I'm not the best!!

www.creationwall.co.uk is also good and quite a bit bigger than redpoint.

I used to instruct in my summers away from Uni. Really want to get back into it but so little time now Perhaps if I do manage my planned move up to the Lakes...

Get used to using the kit at a local wall if you can and then it's a case of finding people to get out on real rock with. Enjoy.

Local wall can be very good to start with but it get boiling hot in summer time making the hold very slippery !! where about in Staffs you from? Wirksworth is not too far.

Off to climb at Matlock Bath tonight myself.

I live in Stoke on Trent. Really looking forward to getting started. I guess indoor lessons then a few outdoor lessons is the best way to go?

I'd definitely start with some indoor lessons. While there it's pretty common for people to be looking for others to join trips to the crags etc, so you may find some people to get outside with fairly easily.

Ooh what you doing? I used to live in Ashbourne so that was one of my local spots. I top-roped (cheated) the E3 (Robert Brown) on High Tor on my 30th. Nearly died of exhaustion and swearing getting up it. No way on earth would I have lead it. Splendid climb though.

ETA What's your favourite peak climb? Mine is the Sloth. One of the few easy overhangs, that is just a joy to climb.

to get a feel for mountains hed up in the direction of Tryfan in Snowdonia, pretty good intro to scrambling/hands on. Done it a few times and still not bored of it.

This is the other weekend when it snowed.
We had just climbed crib Goch in these conditions

Yep, did that a few weeks ago. Couldn't beleive my eyes, idots wearing trainers, jeans and no gear! Asking for trouble if the weather closes in, many get caught out and die every year. When we got to the top of Snowdon we were greated by lumps of snow and ice. We were wearing hats, coats and gloves even though 300m below it was raging hot and suncream!

Made a hasty beeline for Betwys

Going back up in July for tryfan then do the glyders via the bristly ridge . Snowdonia is my fave place in the UK. Even though crib goch looks bad I think Tryfan is more technical and has some pretty nasty drops near the gulleys at the top.
