What's your handicap?
Discussion
At golf of course! Thought I would canvas how many golfers we have on PH, and how good they are?
Mine's a streaky 15 - strike it like a low handicapper, but seem to struggle with consistency which coupled with my tough home course means that I tend to be a bandit away from my usual fairways.
So who's got the lowest handicap?

After years of playing I finally joined a club this month and I'm in the process of getting the handicap.
I suspect I'm going to start somewhere around the 26 mark but I'm confident I'll be able to get down to 18 by the time next years fees become due in March. Just got to get used to this damn tricky course!

I`ve only just started getting into golf, and have been building my self a little 4 hole course. So far have Hole 1, a 280 yard drive ,hole 2, a 200 yard drive hole 3 a 100 yard drive and hole 4 a short 90 yard drive. Putting the sand bunkers in next week and still improving the greens by rolling and frequent cutting. My question for you gol f players is how do you par rate a drive ?

Not really sure I understand the question. If I were to use a driver, I'd be hitting in the region of 250-280 yards (310 down hill with a tail wind ala last week!) I'm not sure I'd get the cub out of the bag for anything less than a 350 yard hole, much better to use an iron and a short iron to the green. marc
On your course, I'd suggest hole 1 is a short par 4, hole 2 a par 3, hole 3 a par 3 and hole 4 a par 3 too.
In simple terms, witout including hazards and hole shape..
1. Assume that a golfer of good ability has 2 putts on each green.
2. Assume that a golfer of good ability can hit a drive 280 yards.
3. Assume a golfer of good ability can hit an iron from 0 to 200 yards.
If the hole is 550 yrds long:
Drive 280 + Iron 200 + Short Iron <100 + 2 putts = Par 5
If the hole is 250 - 480 yrds long:
Drive 280 + Iron 200 +2 putts = Par 4
If the hole is <250 yrds long:
Fairway wood / Iron 200 + 2 putts = Par 3
Holes which are at the extreme distance are generally more difficult. A tough 485 yard Par 4 for instance, or a 235 yard Par 3.
That is totally diregarding the hazards or shape of the holes. These have a major impact on the difficulty, but no effect on the Par.

I try and play 2-3 times a week, and enter most of our club comps.Managing to get around off 4 at the moment - I'd need to do put in some serious practice if I wanted to get any lower but time prevents..
Used to spend more time on the practice field than I did on the golf course as a lad, but not done that for many years now..
I play off what ever my dad is playing off just to make it easy when we play each other, so last time out 19. Though I only play 3-4 times a year, wish I could play more but it takes so much time.
I did start playing as an 8 year old though so should be much better, my fellow junior was Simon Dyson and for some reason I think he put more effort in as he is now a tour player (though shares my lack of qualifying for the open :hehe)

Thanks Guys, that was the sort of info I needed. Its only a knock around `course` but needed some sort of idea of how to rate it shot wise. Hopefully next week I should have the bunker in and I can then start landscaping. I will take some pics as it progresses. When its done I will have in my garden a small stable yard and grass for my Daughters horse and my Sons pony, a combined motor cross (me and my 8 year old have a old Yam TY80 trials bike each and race each other like big kids..) and a small cross country course for the horses around the perimiter, a 5 aside football pitch and a 2 acre fishing lake and few golf drives.
Starting to enjoy retirement.......my wife will wish she never let me have my own digger.

Off Scratch at the moment and just getting back into playing more after a two year lay off. Was a pro playing on the EuroPro tour and European Challenge tour but packed it in in 2006
Got a couple of mates who have been playing Europro stuff (and the Alps tour too - very good level to play at given the crap money up for grabs!
