...or more accurately not on iPlayer. mad

It seems we are able to treat ourselves to another look at "The Man who Can't Stop Hiccuping", but not MoTD. Anyone know why?

Rights issues.

Clips and highlights from the football are available on the BBC Sport website from Mondays, though.

Someone either needs to get themselves to a torrentery, or indeed acquire Sky +.

Again a rights issue. The BBC are allowed to show the Football League highlights online. However they aren't allowed to show Premier League footage online.

I've never played with TVCatchUp before, so having just had a quick look at it and read up on the service, my understanding is as follows:

  • TVCatchUp streams what's being broadcast at that time, and as they have don't have a DVR function (on demand or record service) and it's only available in the UK I think that allows them to show what ever the BBC are showing at the time. I believe that this is the same case with bbc.co.uk which shows the BBC channels. I assume that bbc.co.uk shows MOTD as it's being broadcast, I can't be sure though as I used to work on the show for about 9 years and since living said jobs I've not watched a game of football!
  • iPlayer is deemed as a catch up / on demand service, so MOTD will not be on there as the BBC don't have the online rights for the Premier League and by online rights this means that they aren't allowed to offer the Premier League online. This includes watching MOTD again and also repackaging highlights to show online. However, with the Football League show they do have the online rights and they are allowed to give access to it on demand and repackage content for the website.
Hope this clears it up, essentially watching an IP stream of a show doesn't mean that the broadcaster has the online rights.

ps: The stuff in bold, not trying to be sarcastic, just trying to stress that I'm not 110% on what I'm saying smile

I think by online he meant not live.

It can only be shown live at the 2 set time periods for MOTD and the one set time for MOTD2.

This is because they have only paid for the rights for these. They wont be given the right to show online anytime unless they own the complete rights.

I also find this annoying. I do record MOTD and MOTD2 on my V+ box, but I'd like to watch it on my iPod too.

Just heard on radio that the rights might come to ordinary TV. If this is the case you will be able to watch whenever.

I'm being a bit thick here maybe, but - Boyfold said

Highlights by definition aren't live. I was watching MOTHD Prem football on catchup online on my iPhone at the same time as being shown on the BBC (barring about a 30-60 second delay.)

FWIW i have heard that Catchup TV will soon be releasing a new version (also on iPhone) that can be recordable. This should give the OP more than what he requires no?

Maybe this all ties in why the government is talking about scrapping the TV license and taxing EVERYBODY instead.

Sorry, should have used the word highlights twice, for the Football League and Premier League.

With the Premier League he BBC do not have the right to repackage content and allow users to access this content on demand. Which is why isn't not on iPlayer, this would constitute an 'online' usage. However, they are allowed to do this with the Football League show.

What you are watching is a restream of the main BBC feed, the delay is introduced due to it's delivery method. There is a latency that will be built in due to the transcode and delivery process, not for any rights issues. The fact that you are watching it via an 'online' (IP) delivery method doesn't mean that the content is online.

The difference is you are not allowed to do anything to the stream that you are watching, you can only do that, watch it.

Does that make sense?

This is direct from the MOTD website:

WHY ISN'T MATCH OF THE DAY OFFERED ON iPLAYER/ON DEMAND ON THE WEBSITE/AS A VIDEO PODCAST?

Both Match of the Day and Football Focus are simulcast on the website every weekend - but we can't currently offer the programme on demand throughout the week or on iPlayer because the BBC don't have the rights to show Premier League action on the web outside of live broadcasts.

However, MOTD2 will be available on BBC iPlayer every Tuesday for seven days from the start of the 2010/11 season.

More details here if you would like to read about it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/front_page/6183981...

Yep cheers for that. I was just trying to offer the OP what I thought he wanted.

Like i said just now CatchupTV will soon be making all freeview channels recordable (so i've heard that is). Let's hope so.

Not strange at all.

The TV rights for the Premiership are MUCH more expensive and tightly regulated than those for the Football League. Sky have prime rights on Premiership Football so the BBC just get three shots at their broadcasting of Premiership matches, Match of the Day and Match of the Day 2 and the repeat of Match of the Day on Sunday morning.

The BBC also do not own much of their broadcast material. A lot of it is created and filmed by contracted production companies and the right to place these programmes on iPlayer has to be negotiated and paid for. Sometimes the production companies just ask for too much as they feel they will earn more from other ways of distributing the programmes, such as repeats on other channels or DVD sales.
