I've been fencing for coming up a year now and have just entered my first competition, the Yorkshire Foil Championships.

I'm really looking forward to it, but am strangely nervous (despite having competed internationally in rifle shooting and this only being a regional competition).

Does anyone else fence?

Gave it up when I was 13. Miss it sometimes.

I used to in the Junior school. My short reach meant it wasn't quite for me and I never did like my teacher. Enjoyed it none the less. Think I was 9 or 10 when I gave up.

hehe Yes it isn't a hugely popular sport for kids. It has all the right ingredients, swords, armour and hitting someone you generally dislike but it's somewhat difficult when you're a short arse and the guy you're against is twice your height frown

The best of luck to you, Mark. A shot of adrenaline is only natural before an event like that.

Our teacher (Mr Hill IIRC) trusted a bunch of us 10 year olds to teach us foil, then sabre and then epee. I even bought my own foil to take to further lessons when I left Junior school - got some funny looks on the bus!

Good stuff. Used to fence in various Scottish schools competitions from the age of about 12 to 17. Gave it up at uni though because the club was full of cliquey tw*ts who weren't very welcoming to new members.

They all fenced girl's sword as well though, I used to fence epee biggrin Would love to get back into it but fear I am too fat and inflexible nowadays.

Good luck in your competition though.
