Whilst chatting to a couple of customers about last nights football the following prospect occurred to me.
About a week or so back rumours surfaced that if Liverpool went on to win the Europa Cup 8th place in the prem would qualify for the competition. This rumour was quickly quashed with UEFA stating no extra places would be made available to English clubs.
This brings me to my quandary. With UTD winning the League Cup and Pompy not eligible for a UEFA licence, 7th is currently the last spot available for Europa qualification. With Liverpool now out there's no argument for 8th, but what will happen if Fulham now go on and win the tournament. With UEFA not granting an extra place, will the FA grant Fulham entry to next seasons Europa Cup using one of the place's made available by UTD or Pompy. Thus meaning qualification via the league will only be available to 5th & 6th place in the Prem.
Now as far as I can see a precedent was been set by Liverpool in 2005, after whining about not gaining entry to the Champions League by winning the tournament, they managed to change the rules. The rules now stating if I'm not mistaken, a place from the rep-respective league will be used to cover the shortfall should a team win the tournament but not have already gained access through domestic qualification.
So does this now mean that Liverpool may have caused a rule change that may now mean they wont qualify for any European Cup competition next season.
Just a thought, wondered how you guys saw it panning out?
