England captain Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a knee injury in training.

The 31-year-old centre-back had a scan after hurting his left knee following a challenge with Emile Heskey during Friday's first training session.

He emerged from hospital on crutches and Tottenham's Michael Dawson, who had been put on standby, is expected to fly to South Africa in the next 12 hours.

Vice-captain Steven Gerrard will step up to lead the side at the World Cup.

Was Ferdinand carrying an injury already? Perhaps he was too eager to impress as captain, Dawson is a good replacement.

Bloody Heskey, useful for something eh? Ruining Rio's World Cup as well as Bent's. At least Dawson's been on pretty good form this season and we've got Carragher (experience) and King (probably get crocked too) in there as alternatives.

Still better Ferdinand I guess than someone like Rooney or Lennon.

Rio's missed 3/4 of the season. It was a joke of Capello to make him captain. Stevie G hasn't had a good season by his standards either. Will be interesting to see if he can find some form for his country for a change.

Incidently, whos next to be captain because Gerrard broke down yesterday, nothing too serious.

Thank buggery for that.

We can have Terry and Carra as the first choice centre half pairing now.

The same pairing that should have been the first choice England pairing for the last 5 years.
