I obviously will be right behind New Zealand, and somewhat Australia in the WC, without any realistic hope of either progressing against some of the real 'superpowers' of world football.

Neither me or my significant other comes from england, However, the dilemma I have is whether I support england in their campaign, or not. I have the genuine impression (from day to day peer comments, media, etc) that england supporters are a mainly chav tossers, that wave st. george flags from the windows of their Ford Focus and Transit vans, and cause general bad feeling and havoc when either winning or losing. I realistically know everyone can't be like this... but my perception of majority currently rules.

If you hadn't guessed I live in england currently (and have done for a number of years),I will be watching a lot of the football for the next few weeks from pub and home (as I would for any major TV sporting event), but are the PH crowd as behind the team, as much as the 'sun readers' seem to be??

See the Scotland forum wink

Seriously though, support who you would want to win.

That's all there is to it.

Behave. Every country has it's crappy supporter element, just because the 'image' of an England supporter is the typical skinhead/chav/yob whatever is no reason not to support them.

I'm in Australia and will be supporting both England and Australia (and similar to you, be nice to see NZ do something). The only time this will conflict is the miniscule chance of them meeting in the quarters.

Apart from anything else, you'll be with the majority.

There's a lot of people on PH,and in England, who although don't begrudge their country a fair shot at the Cup,
actually dislike football and the fervour associated with the game in general.

I'm not a huge fan of football, I follow it a little bit but not much more than that. When it comes to England matches however (especially in the world cup) I do take note and I do go down the pub and watch as it's one of the few occasions where it's socially ascceptable to be English instead of British!

I know an Aussie husband and wife, who have lived in the UK for many years. I have been on a couple of footy trips with them (Euro 2000 & WC 06 in Germany) supporting England. He wears the shirt, sings the anthem the lot. Although in Germany they did slip away for a couple of days while they went and watched Australia play!

So, support who you want.

Without appearing rude, I would think that most England Sports Fans would not appreciate a kiwi cheering for England.

You wouldn't do it in cricket or rugby, so why football? (because you're crap at it?).

Bit disappointed that the Celtic nations are supporting ABE (Anyone But England).

I'm English, although grew up in Wales.

From experience (and the British Medical Journal backs me up) 42% of Welsh women look almost exactly the same as Fabio Capello.

You'd think there'd be more of a following for England within the Principality.

I've always been a member of the support who you like school of thought. I have never subscribed, in any sport, to the idea that I must support England at everything just because I was born there. I prefer watching Roger Federer at tennis, France at rugby, and Australia at cricket (please don't hate me, I just prefer their attitude of, "lose trying to win" rather than England's, "play out a dire draw but whatever you do don't lose")

I shall be keeping an eye on England but will be supporting Brasil, where I make my home.

confused

I've always found that foreigners who (sincerely) throw support behind England are appreciated and treated very well.

So why don't they do it in cricket or rugby?

They would no way support England in rugby or cricket (unless the were playing Australia!)
