I was having this conversation with a cycling friend last night, and he mentioned the Tour de France, and I said I thought it was one of the hardest yearly sporting events there is. Another friend didn't agree and said the some of the ironmans they run are harder, and another friend said that the 150 miles over the sahara was the hardest.

I think as it goes, the Tour must be one of the most taxing month long events you can do...

What do you guys think?

The tour de france is only hard on your liver and kidneys, what with all of those chemicals flowing around.

I would expect the hardest event must be something that takes the longest to train for in order to be competitive and on that basis I am going to suggest gymnastics.
On the other hand I don't see many people under 60 doing bowls so perhaps it takes many years of training before you can even get on the grass!

I would have thought if you were capable of doing a Tour De France,an Ironman would be within your fitness/stamina

range. Not sure about an UltraMarathon though...but it should be possible.

So I'd go for Le Tour.

Deca ironman.......

I think the 10 swims followed by 10 cycles and then 10 runs is tougher than the 1 ironman per day...

MMA for me, not only does it include boxing, but also jiu jitsu and wrestling, so you have to be acomplished at all three not to get your arse kicked

The clue's in the phrases "taxing month long events"...

and "what do you guys think?"

as if the paris to dakar is as hard as boxing

look at calzaghe he trained every day for years and years and years
it depends what the OP means. if in terms of general fitness then boxing is no way up there.

I meant one off events, not boxing, or fighting, or tennis FFS. Endurance events, hence my suggestion.

Some of those mega marathons look horrible!!

Has to be the Tour de France as Ultras are too short and something like the Vendee Globe takes over 3.5 months.

There is also the tour of Spain and Switzerland amongst other bike races.Nutters.

Well in that case make it clearer in the title ffs! I missed the bit in your thread that said one off yearly smile

Anyway I stand by my example, not an everyday occurrence I grant you but 6.5hrs of tennis on a very hot day has to be classed as endurance (esp as they had played approx 4hrs the day before.

However I would consider playing tennis, anyone who thinks a mega marathon looks like a good idea has to be a bit mad. I think Tour de France has to the top for this if we could guarantee a drugs free one it would be better.

"1. LAWN BOWLS: Forget those UFC pussies, lawn bowls is for REAL men (and women!). Going off the number of deaths per player, it is the world's most dangerous sport, killing literally thousands worldwide every year. Its hardcore competitors will stop at nothing in pursuit of victory. If you're one of the lucky ones that escapes death, there are thousands more who end up with dislocated ankles, broken hips, torn knees or who simply keel over with a heart attack or a stroke due to the incredibly stressful nature of the game. Either that or it's down to most of the competitors being over 85 and lugging great big balls around."
