are they exactly the same thing? (Netherlands and Holland not BBC and ITV as I know ITV are st)

I presume you are joking.

In the past, the term "England" was used fairly loosely but in more modern times England has always been properly defined as that part of the UK that wasn't Scotland, Wales or Ireland (later Northern Ireland).
