Well thats it, one of the most naturally talented guys to play the game has admiited he will never smash an aussie bowler into the stands again.

Shame his knees just couldn't take the weight when he was running in.

Fantastic player who battled back from a series of career setbacks. eg being fat and a bit st, injuries, pedalos, losing 5-0 in Australia, more injuries etc

Still won the Ashes twice.....

He was a better bowler than he ever was a bat.

He has gone through fitness rehabilitation four times now for the same injury (more or less) I just don't think he fancies the hard work to lose the weight again, or the possibility that by the time he is 40 he will have a permanent limp

I will never forget his part in the 2005 Ashes win.

Great player, great chap.

You cant keep rehab'ing your joints, esp the ankles or knees, esp once you are moving into your mid 30s.

Even with the best medical regimes and programs in the world, all they do is prolong your career and manage the situation thereafter.

Unfortunately Im speaking as a bloke who has had to give up playing more or less all football these days after my wife pretty starkly said "you havent managed your ankles and strengthening them properly, you do much more to them you wont be walking properly in 10yrs time". I still play a bit of volleyball, badders and cricket, but thats it. And as Ive said elsewhere today, my foot has simply gone again this week to the point where I cant stretch it and have barely been able to walk this week. My cars from now on will all be automatic due to this.

Farewell Fred, at your best you were the best in the world. There were and have been players of better sustained excellence, but you join a very select group of players who could change and direct a series simply by force of will.

Well done Fred that's the end of a pretty special cricketing career. A real entertainer and guys like him help to keep the 'masses' interested in the game. I agree with the comments about his bowling, very special. You will be missed mate. And a Lancastrian to boot. Good lad biggrin

He'll be missed, some great memories, mostly of his giving his all, and often so successfully.

It was the All or Nothing, full throttle, leaving nothing in the tank approach to life and the game.

You will always respect that more than the Kallis attitude.
