So im trying to getthis.
They have to move 10 yards in 5 attempts all the way to the end? Sort of like eternal rugby scrums?
It's 10 yards in 4 downs. If you do not make the 10 yards by the end of the 4th down, possession is given to teh other team from that spot. Teams will pass or run ("rush") the ball on the first 3, before either Punting the ball if too far out to score, or trying for a 3 point conversion (like a rugby conversion). Plays are based around the line of scrimmage - the last point that the ball carryer was grounded, or left the field of play.
When passing, the ball can only be thrown forwards from behind the line of scrimmage, and even then, only once per down. As many backward passes ("laterals") can be performed per down, but are very rare.
Gridiron is very much a possession and territorial game, with lots of tactics around when to pass, run, or when to go for the first down if you are on your fourth down, and chasing the game.
It's worth trying to get in to - try and find a beginners guide to football so that you know your tight end from your safety, and ease into it that way.
