Fancy adding this to my fitness push for some variety, plus seems a good way of turning those i need to hit something" moods into something constructive!

Don't really want to spend a fortune, seen a few on ebay for around 40 quid delivered, filled too.

Some are unfilled, just wondered what you fil them with?

Any input welcome smile

Depends on how hard/heavy you want it.

If you're new to using a punchag/combat arts, I'd stick with foam packed in tightly.

Don't fill it with sand....you'll break your hands smile

Most of the self filled ones I've used were filled with old clothes.

Local school does body conditioning... it's like the opposite of hair conditioning. biggrin Gravel and stones in a bag. Punch it or beat yourself with it.

Both waaay too cheap and if you use the bag for kicking as well it'll be knackered within a week.

Lots of gym punchbags filled with clothes,as mentioned.Make sure you've got somewhere really solid to fix a bracket.

Just punching, legs arn't bendy enough to kick with wink

Mounting isn't a problem, will go in the workshop hing off a roof joist.

Havee seen a few "unfilled" bags on the bay, do you just fill them with clothes alone? is there enough weight or do you put heavier stuff in the bottom?

(Total newbie here, ignore the ignorance)

Yes,just clothes.A reasonably sized punchbag will take a surprising amount of clothes to fill.

I mean you REALLY have to cram them in!

Decent bag should cost £50 - £70 I reckon.

If you intend long lasting and extreme violence then spend a bit.

I'm picturing a snooker ball in a sock style of weapon here but on a larger scale.

Have you ever seen those movies where the hero hardens his legs by kicking a tree repeatedly till it breaks? Same principal here. Basically, you are condiditioning the body to take and receive blows much harder than normal. It's not just ninja-mind-control that helps to break those slabs of concrete you see being smashed; rock solid, calloused (sp?) hands help!

I'd hazard a guess that somewhere, some crazy TMA guy is beating his body right now with a snooker ball in a sock!

Yeah I totally see how it can do that and I guess it's why I get told to do press ups on my knuckles, a few weeks ago it was bloody hard now I can just pump them out with little pain. Never knew you did it to the whole body but I guess that's what full contact sparring does to you.

We've gone way off topic here =\

State school or private?

What's the Ofsted report say about it?

Having had all sorts including fill it yourself jobs I'd watch the false economy thing if you do want to keep enjoying using it for a while.

This

should be good, not far from your £40 suggestion and saving the hassle (and it can be!) of packing it yourself

or:

both from:

These angled bags are versatile and good fun to use.

hehe I think it's two fold (not the sock, the reason for training this way):
1) kill nerves at impact areas
2) damage bone tissue so it heals harder

I guess they did it initially (1000 years ago) because they thought it was purely getting used to the pain and toughening the skin but science found it was more than that.

Take my shins, for instance, growing up in a "chalet bungalow" with a slatted staircase was a form of body conditioning as you'd slip daily and grind your shins on the hard, wooden edges. When I was naughty, my parents made me run up and down the stairs in socks. (Only kidding.) I always noticed how during sparring if we clashed shins, the opponent would yelp in pain and I'd just stand there wondering why he was being a girl. biggrin If you run your finger down the front of my tibias, though, you can feel dents and ridges. I'm not sure they're supposed to be like that.
