Does anyone know when the entry process for the 2012 london marathon begins - I have googled but can't find any information on it and want to make sure I dont miss it!

Many thanks

the lottery will open on the monday or tuesday after the 2011 race. i think i read that there are about 50 applications for each place so unless you can meet the "age-time" requirements for a guarateed entry or are prepared to pay £1500 for a charity place, you are in the hands of the gods.

i didnt get a place in 2011 so have started looking at other races, there are loads already advertised on www.runnersworld.co.uk

Cheers, do you know if any charities ever give places for (significantly) less than the c£1500? There seem to be loads advertising places and I would imagine some are not taken up, especially for the more obscure charities, so wondered what they do with them at the last minute?

Another way to get a place is to join an English Athletics affiliated running club - i think they get an allocation of places, presumably depending on number of members. I have recently joined one (only £7 per year) and i think they get 2 places which are given out according to certain criteria, very unlikely I will get one for 2011 but perhaps fopr 2012 if I am lucky!

Promise to raise a LOT of money for a charity and they will give you a place.

as i understand it, the £1500 is a bond really, you have to pay it to get on their books and get the place, then its up to you to "re-coup" that £1500 through sponsorship... i dont think there are many late notice charity places going cheap as i guess they have to pay for the places in the race

I have seen a lot of runners with entries who get injured do pass them around on the usual running forums but i dont know how this works with ID requiremetns etc

You don't actually have to pay £1500 for the place, you just have to be able to raise that.

Not sure what happens if you fall short of the £1500 though.

There are a number of options:

1) Apply through the ballot... as explained previously
2) charity place
3) Join an EA affliated club and you might get one of their places
4) achieve a good for age time (sub 3:10 for senior men) or a sub 1:15 half marathon
5) Lucozade man the drinks stations. My club used to get 4 places which were raffled off by sending 50 people to the drinks station to help out..

Good luck

Most charities require £2000, and yes they require it up front.

I missed out on the general ballot for London 2011, but I'm doing Venice next Sunday and Paris next year. Might yet go for a charity place for London, but that would mean 2 in 8 days (it is the week after Paris). But I do that in training so it can't be that hard!

Is that right? I'm not a million miles off getting a good for age over the full distance, I don't think I could get close to 5:40 pace over a half but always interesting to know.

Wow that's harsh. eek

First time I entered I got lucky with the ballot but the second time I did it I was awarded a "Golden Bond" place where you pledge to raise £1500 or make up the difference yourself. I think I had to sign something to that effect as part of getting the place but there was no paying up front, they got the money paid to them directly by Justgiving or anything I collected I had to pay into their bank account at the local branch after the event.

I think if you enter 5 years in a row through the ballot without getting a place you automatically get one the following year. Doesn't really help you for 2012 though.

Sadly this no longer applies. No matter how many times you get rejected.

I missed out this year ballet for next year, will try again for next year.

I might try the New york, think that is done on a ballet as well and that race is in Novemeber, I assume the ballet will open in Novemeber.

Yes, check the website, but I am sure it's true
