Employment - out of contract what next
Discussion
A not so close aquaintance with a very good job - highly paid and very few hours and lots of fringe benefits, but as his contract was up for renewal he thought he would look around and see if he could get paid even more elsewhere.
His wife is keen for him to move to somewhere with more shops - Madrid or Barcelona, but he would struggle to learn another language - or anything really. It's a wonder he can bring up a kid - and he has had a few marital difficulties lately!!
His boss is being a complete arse over him not renewing his contract, and has even held a spoken out in public, rambling on for six minutes about how his formerly star employee has let the side down for no good reason - but then said the door is always open for him to stay!
After his bosses outburst in public, he is tempted to tell him to stuff his job - but since he got caught playing away from home recently, he would rather stay with his mates.
Should he renew his contract, or follow his wife's advice and look elsewhere in Europe for more money, with the downside that he would struggle to communicate?
Or is he just a greedy, over paid, whinger with little real talent who should go and get a proper job in the real world?

Very good. Although if it's the same person that I know, he has difficulty communicating anyway. Some strange local dialect. IMHO, he only has a 50% intention of leaving at best.
Looking between the lines, it is a game of poker:
The employer wants him to sign a contract ASAP as as time goes on, for the next 18 months his value to be sold only decreases and there is the risk he can sit out his contract and leave for free.
On the other hand, the employee - or more accurately his agent - wants to play that for his advantage. He doesn't *really* want to leave and his club don't want him to leave either.
Remember that at 24, he will be looking to sign possibly a 6 year contract. His agent is probably looking at asking for £150,000 per week or more . His employer £100,000 or less.
Over 6 years, that is a minimum difference to both parties of £15.6m so worth arguing over. More importantly, this is his agent's payday and pension sorted.
Additionally his employer knows time is against them, so, if he is to be sold, he has to be sold now rather than later.
But... of course the employee's reasons for leaving are not insurmountable, and cleverly so - because it means that both parties could publicly 'make up' should those 'assurances' be given and accepted. This is poker, nothing more.

The only other local firm that can afford this temperamental employee has a load of customers who really dislike him.
Oh, so it's not just me then?He and his ilk are grossly overpaid - and it's rumoured that MU cannot afford to pay the increase he wants - but it serves then right for indulging him in the first place!

Ha ha! Football is the real world and it's a proper job. I don't understand the jealousy of some people... Lots of people get paid as much if not more and I bet you don't give them a second thought. Anyhow, Fergie should call his bluff, close the door on him and sell him. Simple.
