He's wanting to leave Sunderland and appaz Villa are interested at £18m. I find this surprising as surely he's one of the most overrated strikers going? Defenders appear to find him easy to stop and even if he does get through he'll usually shoot at the keeper, rather than somewhere to one side of him.

He's not great but he's better than most, seem to be OK as the big fish in a small pond.

Scored a decent amount of goals at Ipswich, Charlton and Sunderland. Even at Spurs he's record isn't to shabby compared to say Keane or Crouch.

His goalscoring record is up there as one of the top current English strikers. Why he wants a transfer to a team that is clearly struggling and toying with relegation is beyond me, I can only think he looking for an improved contract at Sunderland or they already have a replacement striker ready and need the cash to do the deal.

18 mil is a bit pricey but hes not as bad as op may suggest. Cant see too many clubs waiting at that price, probably more around 11/12 mil. Wouldn't surprise me if Spurs went back in for him, they mind signing a player they've had before...

Nothing against the bloke personally but the valuation does make the old eyebrow twitch a bit. If you were a Prem manager would you bend the Chairman's arm to get him? The teams who really need a good striker probably couldn't afford him. He just seems like someone who needs a decent team around him, ie by definition not the teams who might need him. Can't see the likes of Utd, City, Arse-nil etc putting their hats in the ring, and surely he'd disappear onto the subs' bench at Spurs.

They reckon the Spurs-Sunderland deal is worth £16.5m all told, so it's not that big an increase in perceived value, but you'd still be surprised if he made £18m. He's not exactly shown himself to be a humble or patient sort of guy, suspect he might be a managerial nightmare.

Strikers are stupidly expensive. All the other players who scored a similar quantity of goals would be equally expensive in terms of transfer fees/wages.

Rank Scorer Club Goals
1 Didier Drogba Chelsea 29
2 Wayne Rooney Manchester United 26
3 Darren Bent Sunderland 24
4 Carlos Tévez Manchester City 23
5 Frank Lampard Chelsea 22
6 Jermain Defoe Tottenham Hotspur 18
Fernando Torres Liverpool 18
8 Cesc Fàbregas Arsenal 15
9 Emmanuel Adebayor Manchester City 14
10 Gabriel Agbonlahor Aston Villa 13

At 26 Bent has a proven record in the perm and should have a sell on value.

For them as can afford it, I guess the numbers aren't that important. It's all relative, as they say. If I were a manager my interest in Torres would be more than double my interest in Bent.

Rising to £24m apparently

Also given that Martin O'Neil resigned for not being given enough money to spend it makes you think where this has come from.

But has any team ever been saved by one man, on either the playing or management side?
