NC said:
"He's an extremely inexperienced and not very bright footballer. He should have chested the ball and hooked it into the corner flag with five minutes to go.

"That's what experienced, good players do in that situation. And despite being told - and he has been with us 10 months - he is still doing things like that. He can go back to Wigan or wherever he came from - I'm not really bothered - until he learns the game.
Way to help his confidence!

Fisrt off, Gordon Taylor, what a complete plank.
Nigels had ten months paying some gormless twonk, who can't do the simplest thing?
He summed it up at the end with he doesn't really giver a monkeys what he does.
Just look at the boys wages, and you'd think the same.
The thing about NC isd he just plays it straight, not like half the others.

Sounds fair enough to me. Guy had been told to not play a certain way and then did, if we believe Mr Clough.

I've got no problem with the public critism of players who fail to perform.

Sure, but out of order to air dirty laundry in public. If you are pissed off with a player, deal with it in the dressing room or send him back etc. Don't mark a player for the duration of his career.

Good or bad, that guy is now always going to be the player that Nigel Clough slagged off.

There'a difference between playing it straight and giving your players cause to think you'll publicly humiliate them. The comments aren't something that can be passed off, they're pointed and direct. Fair enough if you're edging someone out of the team (although that's fairly stupid, the position they're in right now), but respect goes both ways and doing this won't endear him to the players; he's not earnt the respect yet.

He's feeling the pressure and is taking out his frustration. Not cool.

Exactly.

You would not do that in any other work place. If someone performed poorly, I would not call a staff meeting to slag them off and tell everyone I was sending them to the Alaskan office.

It may well work against him, as now all his players are going to be playing knowing that a major mistake will result in them being humiliated in the public eye.

I am all for taking him aside privately and giving him the hairdryer treatment.

But publicly ranting about him shows Clough up to be a poor man-manager. How does he get the trust of his players back now?

Same answer. They need to to swallow it and get on with it if its the truth. Jeez too bloody sensitive if it means they go and sulk in a corner. An occasional outburst is perfectly acceptable in my book. Lets have some characters in the game.

Bad management in my view, you should always put forward a united front and take matters like this into hand privately. There's simply no need to do it publicly, unless he is trying to wash his hands of the situation and win favour with fans. Which is also terrible management.

Personally I couldn't give a toss about the players feelings, and that's not really what this is about in my eyes. The result of that outburst will be felt much more deeply in the dressing room in that it suggests the manager can't be trusted, that he's feeling the pressure and passing the blame.

IIRC O'Leary did a similar thing at Leeds and lost the dressing room, think Clough is going to do the same, sadly.
