Gday all
Regarding my rattle under the car...
Had it under the hoist this evening... had a good look and tap ...
Guess what... it was the radiator cowling ,,,,the top half had come apart.. just leaving the bottom intact ....
Thus the strange banging...
At this stage a cable tie was used to try and keep it together.
You said yours went the same way.... what did or are using till you fix it properly ? ... does it still rattle?

Is there a easy way of taking out the cowling to fix and or fabricate a bit more life out of it

Kylie your not bad for a kiwi
(at least you beat the poms at rugby the other Saturday..... we have a go at them this Sat)

Many thanks

Wooohooo...got it right!! Yes mine is really stuffed. I was thinking about just pulling the whole lot out and regluing it up. You may even be able to do it under there if you clamp it all in place to keep it tidy and even too.
It does look a nightmare to pull out, but do able if you just pick through bit by bit. The fibreglass outer cowling cover on mine has cracked corners that I need to repair as well, so I think its going to take me more than a weekend to fix. Additionally you can just take the plunge and order all the parts and get someone else to fiddle with it.
Let me know how you get on.
Cheers
Kylie

Hi guys (and gal),
Re. that cowling... it is not hard to remove per say if you can get the car up off the ground providing enough room to work while keeping it low enough to reach... BUT it is teeeeedious in the first order. One of those things that you just keep finding one more thing to move or remove...

However, once you get it off, and if it is a clean crack, use a bit of super glue to get it to hold together (this will just keep it together to the touch).

Then, mix up a bit of fiber resin, brush it on and let it dry. Do not worry about the stuff being smoth at this point. Repeat this a couple times and then sand it down so it is mostly smooth.

At this point a few 'colorful' words may be used.

Done sanding? Wipe it off with a clean rag and alcohol. then mix up some more resin and apply either carbon fiber or glass fiber shreads with a blot brush
- not a sheet or square but the stuff you can buy from hardware stores already pulled appart and shreaded.

Once dry, sand it smooth. Be carful as not to sand to far. Wipe clean as before and paint. Cheap Krylon all weather works well if you keep about 12 inches (sorry 26 centimeters) away and spray several thin coats.

Now. About this Cricket? Isn't that something with 6 legs used to fish with? (just kidding)

Drive topless!!!

Hey your putting more Carbon fibre thoughts into my head. It would be pretty easy to make a mould off that fibreglass cowling. You wont be able to see it but I guess the mechanic would appreciate it and I know its there??

and... it will be a bit stronger. In fact, if you are going to go the mould rout and build a new part all the way... run some N guage steel wire in the first couple layers of the carbon!

Of course... since you will have a mould... you may as well and build at least one more for my car!
