Tomorrows World Bullet proof car?
Discussion
Hi
I saw a tomorrows world programme in which a 22 bullet was fired at a lotus to show how chip resistant the kevlar reinforced body was. I have been trying to identify which parts of the car are kevlar reinforced in the manufacturing process. Can anyone help me indentify the panels? Also are any other lotus cars similarly reinforced and if so which parts?

I was discussing Kevlar (aramids) with a chemist friend of mine just the other day. They get their strength from a chain of crystal structures. During an impact, the chain of crystals shatters, which absorbs the energy of the impact. Thus, after 1 use, you throw away your bullet proof vest because the chain of crystals is now shattered and the next bullet at the same location may not be stopped. Not sure how this effects our cars, but my guess is that after a major boo-boo, we are losing a lot of strength in the panels that the Kevlar contributed.
