Hi All.

I got an ALDL interface from Andy Whitaker a while back but never got around to using it. But now the time has come for me to use it, I can't get it working!

I'm using a 9 pin serial cable with a gender changer at the computer end.
Can anyone tell me what data (speed etc) settings I should be using for the COM port?
Any other suggestions.

I've been using the ALDL port at the front, and the data light is flashing when the engine is running. Do I need to wire a cable loop into the plug to put the ECM into diagnostic mode?

Thanks
Gareth

I've only used the interface on an M100 Elan but we had problems to start with because we were using a null modem cable not a straight wired serial cable. Once we got the right cable it worked no problem we didn't have to short the diagnostic pins and we used COM1 set at a baud rate of 8192

Ok,

I'd better check on the cable, the one I'm using came out of a 'box of bits' so I'm not sure on the type!

Any ideas on how to check, what's the difference in the wireing?

Cheers,
Gareth

Not sure how you'd check the cable the diffrence is some pins in the null modem cables are cross wired. You need a cable were the connectors pins are wired straight pin 1 to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2, etc. Can you get the lap top close enough to just use the gender changer? because that will be straight wired.

I never thought of that! I'll give it a go later as I'm sure I can get it that close.

I too bought an adapter from Whittaker. It would not work no matter what odem cable I tried. I screwed around asking for help on PH and TurboEsprit for weeks. Andy would not answer my requests for help.
I finally happened to notice the colour of the wires on the picture on Andy's website - www.andywhittaker.com/ecu/aldl_hardware.htm.
My purple and orange wires were crossed at the connector!!!!
I switched them to where they should be and everything worked fine.
Make sure the wiring is right:
PIN A - Black Wire connected to Ground (0V)
PIN G - Orange Wire - This is where the data input (RX) / output (TX) happens.
PIN F - Purple Wire - +12V supply from the ECU fuse.

The correct serial cable is a "straight-through" cable. (ie pin1 to pin1, pin2 to pin2, pin3 to pin3, etc)

Thanks for the help chaps.

I pluged the unit direct into the notebook via the gender changer - worked!
