Well, the 89 didn't come with a remote keyless entry or alarm, although it does have power door locks. Any suggestions on aftermarket systems (in US)?

Thanks.

Hi Mate
I have a Clifford Concept 300,which is an American Company (so should be able to get them over the pond) Anyway the Concept 300 gives you a remote start option,Turbo timer,Full enclosure,Microwave detectors(so you can leave the windows down and STILL set the alarm),very reliable Insurance Thatcham 1 approved (dunno if you have that over there),Remote locking,Anti Hijack locking,Panic alarm....errm if you need any more info send me a email.
Hope this helps

the factory alarm has many of these features, what we need is a simple system that can arm the factory alarm and lock the doors..
the hard part it that the facotry alarm only acivates when the car is double locked., and this can only be done with the key. I think that we should be able to disconnect that wire and have the system arm with the single lock.
when you need the deadbolts on too, you would just insert the key after you arm it remotely and turn it fully.. This is typical for BMWs that use the same lock system

John,

Can you provide the list of wires to tap into as well as what relay you used and how you tied it into the factory alarm system? I have had the keyless entry system for the past 2 months, but haven't installed it yet.

Hey Karl,
I just double checked the wires and they are orange with blue, and orange with red. These are in the front boot. There is a relay unit under the ABS control on the passenger side. On mine it has GM markings on it. I cant remember which wire is for locking and which one is for unlocking. Unfortunatly I dont remember if it is a ground or positive activation but I believe it is a ground activation. Connecting your keyless entry to these wires will lock and unlock your system, but wont activate/deactivate the alarm. To do this you need to attach a relay (any 12v relay you can find in Radio Shack or an autoparts store just like the relay you would use for add on driving lights etc). You now want to remove the wires going to the micro door switch and connect the wires on to the relay so that supplying power and ground to the appropriate leads on the relay will activate the relay and perform the same action the micro switch did. Now have the keyless entry actvate the relay when armed and deactivate the relay when disarmed via an output that should be available on the keyless entry. Most keyless entrys/alarms have an output that is grounded when armed and not grounded when disarmed. At the same time you will want to change the microswitch so that it will also activate the relay the same way the keyless entry does. Basically you have one wire grounded and the other connected to the ground activated lead on the relay so when the switch is activated by turning the key, it activates the relay and activates the alarm. So useing the key still locks both doors and activates the alarm just as normal. I was able to locate 12v and ground in the door but had to run one wire into the door from the keyless entry that activates the relay.
I hope all this is understandable. If you have any questions, let me know and I can give you a call sometime. I recall you had some questions about my audio/video install too. Just let me know.
