Found the smell....
Discussion
the rubber gaiter under the shift boot is totally cracked. I cant wait to get a new one..
I have to find where to get one..
who knows where to get it?
it looks like a CV boot... hehehe... hmm well I hope someone knows. if not I will call JAE on monday...
the car will be killer when this is gone..
I think this is the new esprit smell once all the vent hoses are changed.
On another note I got the headlight motor from the firebird and swapped the motor part onto my gearbox.
then I took 2 control modules from the scrap yard and even though you though you guys said they never fail.
so mine was melted inside, the first one I put in did nto work, left light still down... i cracked it open and it was melted inside too.
then i installed the third one and still no left light
i opened it and the relay was not melted... hmm,,, then i saw some solder joints cracked and re-flowed them.
Finally I have headlights.. way more work than what I want.

Jim and some of the guys in town have been using one from checker auto a chain store. not exactly oem but it's under the leather boot.
Hi,
The inner boot of a Jeep CJ-5 from NAPA is about a 95% match and at $5 vs something like $45 from Lotus, is a practical alternative.
The only things you need to do is cut down the base maybe 1/4" with a scissors and poke 2 holes through it for the mounting screws.
The rubber is thicker and more robust so shifts will feel more sure ie. slightly more pressure needed (maybe a ft/lb). As mentioned, it lives under the leather boot, so who cares. Happy motoring! ...Jim'85TE
