I don't know if any of you read general gassing or not. But it is sort of a melting pot of all sorts of posts. I visit there because so many of you have become very good with Esprit's so I lurk more than I post on the Esprit section as opposed to when I first joined PH.

As some of you know Gazboy has tinkered with the idea of buying an Esprit. He did not have a good 1st experience with a car from a dealer as per his post. From his description the Esprit did not work well and something was very wrong with it.

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?p=4&f=23&t=118218&h=0

I was sort of waiting for UK volunteers to help him out and I don't know if anyone has emailed him off forum to assist him.

In the USA if someone had posted something like what Gazboy posted in the above on the turbo list, there would be a flurry of postings to assist him. We Lotus owners (future owner included too) are a close knit group, must remain so, and I consider it almost an obligation to assist each other when the time comes as we are usually hardcore car people.

So here is what I would like to see happen:

1) Since the car from the dealer he test drove is suspect in performance, someone needs to at least take him for a ride in a well sorted example of the SE model 89 1/2 or newer. I know Gazboy would prefer to drive one, but many people refrain from letting others driving their cars. To many it's almost like letting someone try out their wife or girlfriend. But he should at least be able to ride in one at a minimum. As a matter of fact many times a robust ride in a well sorted car with an experienced Lotus driver is prefered over a somewhat awkward 1st Lotus attempt if one wants to experience a top notch ride experience.

2) Let him experience a few different models so he knows first hand what the real world difference is between the models.

I have driven every model Esprit available in the USA and I thank the various owners who have allowed me take their pride and joy on the road for a test drive.

So UK Esprit owners show Gazboy what kind of stuff we Lotus owners are made of and assist him in his quest for a car.

Regards,
Calvin

I agree Calvin, and wish someone over there would help him as it seems an opportunity lost. I hope he dosen't give up based on one small experience and gets the opportunity to ride in other cars to see their real potential.

hi,

my car should be out of the garage next week (after a 3 year rebuild) can you tell me where the guy is based as i would take him out in my 88 turbo. But i must add he will not be able to experience the speed as i have just had a brand new engine fitted. Or he could wait (not long once she comes out no doubt) till i have run her in then he will be able to see more of the benifits of this awsome machine.

Gazboy is in an area called West Chilterns per his profile.

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/profile.asp?h=0&memberId=24039

A well sort 88 is very quick and in the hands of good driver can pretty much keep with SE's. While unable to overtake it will not disappear in the SE's rear mirror.

The main reason for taking Gaz for a ride in an well sorted 4 cyl. SE is so he many have a base line to compare other SE's that are for sale.

If he encounters an SE for sale not up to par it could still be a good buy if a reduction in price makes it worth while if he knows what to look for. After all we all look for that sort of thing, a good deal for minor fixes is good thing. So that SE he drove could still be a good deal if it was brought to the attention of the dealer that the car was not quite right or they agreed to remedy the faults of the car.

By the way Gaz, Superdave was thinking of upgrading to a V8. He has a well sorted 4cyl. SE.

Jim, ha-ha I know some people who would rather let someone have a go at their wife or girlgriend rather than let someone else drive their car.

Most of the time I let people drive my car if they had some sort of performance driving or have own a high performance car as the accident rate for Esprit's are fairly horrid for the 1 year novice and I worry about that stat.

general public really dont understand that a fast car is Hard to drive.
super traction is great in a slow car, very hard to crash.
I feel like I am always abotu to crash in the lotus.. and never feel that in the BMWs

How true about being difficult to drive.

Try one of our cars on ice/sleet at 35-40mph, Almost soiled myself. I got caught in late season sleet. I rather be driving 150 on dry pavement.
