Got in the car the other day and turned the engine over and the speedometer went nuts. It seems to sit at about 35 to 45 and move around some from that when driving but is very erratic.
Has anyone had this problem and can help?
My guess is that it is in the speedometer itself. I am convinced I can hear a noise from the instrument.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It would be helpful also if anyone can point me towards a shop manual for the car.

The worm drive and movement has broken. The speedo unit is sealed/crimped like a tin can top. I removed mine and opened it up but needed to take it to a speedo shop to have it reassembled due to the fact I did not have a rolled crimper to put the top back on.

Look for a local VDO repair place.

You can save a bit by removing the speedo from the binnicale and sending it to the shop. Use a bit of liquid soap under the rubber ring holding the speedo and remove through the front of the facia.

Sanj has a got a good pictorial instruction for removing the binnicale top, 2 screws and 10mm bolt and it comes right off. http://turboesprit.tripod.com/binnacle.html
