I have my tach problem figured out, well..... sort of I do. It is better to say I understand what is happening to it.
The VDO tach itself, the tach under the binnacle shorts and pegs itself when it gets warm. Now I know it is something that happens to the tach itself as, if I leave my car out in the sun during the day. It will not work when I come out at night to go home from work. I tested this theory by rolling her out of the garage and checking the tach with the key to the energized position (it was fine, no reading what so ever as it should be). Then after a coupe hours out in the sun I went back, energized the system again and presto it pegged. I have repeated this several times so I am convinced it is a thermal short within the tach.
Now comes the question. Has anybody at all had this kind of issue before and if so is there a solution other than installing a replacement tach. If replacement is the answer any suggestions on where to get a OEM replacemnt tach?
I look forward to the replies. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

If you can remove and open it up. Use a can of freeze mist with a straw to chill various components while the car is running. Isolate the offending part and replace it.

Or just remove it from the binnicale and take it to your nearest VDO repair shop. I posted a link to Sanj's site on how to remove the binnacle cover in an earlier post.
