I was wondering if any of the Esprit S4s owners would be able to tell me how they hold up to newer sports cars on the road today? Would any body like to share some road stories of some spirited driving against the other makes of sports cars out in the market today.

I don't like to 'drag' people as most that try are hoons driving either Commodores (GM family sedans that are done up) or rice rockets. I just simply don't have the time for them.

However, I can remember two memorable times. Once, I was on the freeway doing about 120kmph. This GXR 1100 bike pulled up besides me and he made it clear what his intentions were. I dropped to third and we both slowed to 80. We both nodded and we floored it. He got up on his back wheel and we were both even until he had to change gear and I didn't. He fell one car length behind, got back on his back wheel again but he couldn't catch up, then he had to change gears again and I still didn't. He lost another car length. By the time I changed into 4th at 190, he just didn't have a chance to catch up, then we slowed down and he gave me the thumbs up. Felt good to out accelerate a big bike.

Other time, I was at the lights and a WRX Sti pulled up besides me and started revving. I remembered the trick that Calvin said about putting the car in overboost ( I never tried it before).
HOLY CR*P!!!!! The car just exploded forward, my head smashed the head rest and I was losing traction with each gear change. Needles to say the WRX was left in the dust.

Oh, and there was this other time when I was driving behind this 300KW GenIII Statesman. He did the turn onto the freeway as fast as he could without tipping over and I was right behind him. The he floored it ( I know he did 'cause bit of smoke came out of his exhausts) but I was right behind him and I wasn't even flooring it. After a few seconds, I got sick of it and I floored it and overtook him. The hillarious part was that when I went past him his mouth was totally wide open with a bewildered look on his face.

Similar story but with my v8, rather than an s4s. A guy i work with buys himself one of those new bmw m3's. After he's had it for a month, we end up after a meeting on the same road, driving in the same direction... he completely floors it coming of a roundabout on to a dual carraigeway (i see smoke from the exhausts). I boot the esprit thinking i'll just go along side and 'wave' at him - the thing gets so much momentum so quickly i end up shooting straight past. By 90mph i was 4 car lenght ahead (laughing!) and backing off..

Andecorp.....Hi, when you say you put your car in overboost, is that simply giving the car very high revs before letting clutch out? Or its a feature my car dosent have?

Overboost happens when you rev the engine to over 5000rpm when the car is standing stiill ( < 2mph ). You then get increased boost for 30 seconds. It only happens on cars with an ECU ( I think ). To give you an example, my GT3 overboosts from 0.75 normally to 0.84, so an extra 12%. That extra makes a huge difference. But, I've had a new ECU chip from Moto-Concept, which increases the overboost to 1.2bar, 60% more. I've only tried it once as I nearly cr*pped myself when I tried it !

Kylie,

Lotus test drivers use it to get 0-60 times. Put the the car in netural stick on 5k-5.5k on the rev counter, then let it drop back down, engage first then do your stuff. (you have 30 sec to do it in).

Not an S4s, but in my SE last year (with a bigger turbo and S4s chip) I had some fun with a Kawasaki Ninja. On the straights we didn't go crazy...he was drafting me, and the road is policed.

But when I turned off the main highway onto to twisty bits, I decided to have some fun and he followed. Mid-way to my house, I looked back and the bike was gone. I figured he'd gotten bored and left...until he pulled up to my driveway a minute or so later. He confessed to me that he tried like hell to keep up, but he didn't have a prayer. The admission won him a beer, and we had a good laugh about it.

Is this overboost feature available on the S4S? Does it require a chip mod?

It's factory. Think of it as a "game cheat"...

I have a 95 S4...

I was coming out of my neighborhood and low and behold, an SVT Corbra Mustang was behind me at the light. The light turned green and I accelerated at a nominal speed. I heard the sound of his v8 and I told my wife that this guy wants to race, go for it...

I pushed the throttle and I only got 9psi, our car was only up to 75c and of course he crept by and eventually passed me.

I met him at the next light and told him that my car needed to warm up. Being the arrogant mustang type he said, "Sure thing." with a smirk on his face. I told him that I also have an 800hp trans am and that the esprit was my daily driver. I looked at my temp and the holy grail of 82c appeared. I looked over my shoulder and told him, "Let's give it another try."

The light turned green and we moved off the line slowly not to create a seen, I punched the accelerator and a blast of 330 hp thanks to Sanj was ripping my tires. At my switch to third, I was almost 6 cars ahead of him. I had to slow down because my speed was getting out of hand. As time went by, I hear a vroooom finally meet me and was still him. He shouted, "That's sweeeet!" I gave him a peace sign, we have to do this more often in america, and my wife and I just couldn't help stop laughing. We celebrated and had a half caf double decaf soy tall mocha with whip cream at Starbucks! Hehe hehe.

Cheers,
Dindo

Hey, don't laugh, Starbucks rules! My friend at work (former SEAL) caught me with a Peppermint Mocha Latte once at work...which I still haven't lived down. Somehow my explanation that the girlfriend ordered it and didn't like it, so I gave her my Gingerbread Latte and took hers didn't get me off the hook.

Great race story...I hafta check out that 330HP chip someday.
