My 88' Esprit Turbo won't take power. I was driving today and it drove fine. Then I noticed when park and idling the rpms would drop to around 700-800. I would give it some gas a few times and it cleared up. It got worse. Not when I start the car it idles around 400-500 rpm and doesn't want to take any throttle. It wants to stall/bog more when given gas. I can't get it above 1000rpm hot or cold.
Items I have looked at:
Battery good
Voltage at coil 12.57 V
Have spark on all cylinders
Both Fuel Pump fuses are ok
Both fuel pump relays are ok
From what I can gather my car's timing is advancing.

It is a Bosch Injected Esprit with Lucas ignition. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Not good news. First, check the throttle cable to be sure it is tight and fully opening the throttle plates. I suspect that while this may be the cause of your issues, you have another problem.

The symptoms you are describing are demonstative of having had the timing belt slip (ask me how I know this). Avoid driving the car. Set the engine at TDC by pushing the car in 5th gear forward until the timing alignment dots on the rims of your cam pulleys line up (if you run out of room, place the car in neutral, back it up, re-engage 5th gear and push forward again until you get it lined up).

Now, check the flywheel timing marks and see if TDC (Top Dead Center) is lined up with the pointer. If so, you have another issue, if not, your timing belt has slipped.

The fix is to reset the timing properly and re-tension the timing belt, in fact, this is a good time to replce it if it's been 2 years or 20k mo. since you last changed it. The important thing is to not start the car 'til this is fixed because the torque of the starter is what causes the belt to slip and if it slips any more, you will cause extreme engine damage. Thanks for the info. It turned out to be the WUR. I disconnected it when the car was running poorly and it ran great. No hesitation, popping, etc. I took it off the car and took it apart, etc. Put it back on now the car runs great. Fires right up when cold without a stumble. It never ran this great cold.
