I own a '79 Esprit S2 with the 507 type engine. It has 80 kmls on it's tacho and does not run well. I think I need to rebuild it completely. Is there anybody who could tell me howe much the parts are and where I could get them ? Is there a chance to use up to date parts from other engines to make the engine stronger ? The 150 hp do not impress me much. So, is there an easy way to tune up that motor. E.g. using cylinders a pistons of a 2.2 liter engine ? Or should I even put in a completely other modern, powerful, and stable engine. Somewhere I found one with a Ford V6 in it. Any suggestions, experience ? Your help is appreciated.
Cheers - Joe from Germany

For an engine transplant at least consider the weight.
The Lotus engine weighs 275lb and the Ford essex V6 379lb!
Actually the Rover V8 is lighter at 318lb
Interesting to note the Stag V8 was a lot heavier at 446lb, why did they bother?
A list of engine weights on this site

How about the Caddy V16 at 1300lb !!
There are a few modern twin cam fours that are a lot more powerful. Beware. Any engine swap is never as easy as it first looks.

Joe, I previously owned an 83 Turbo and was considering an engine swap. I did quite a bit of research and found the Esprit I think you are talking about with the Ford v6. It was nicknamed Shotus. It used a Ford Taurus SHO engine. The guy that did the swap has since sold the car, but I spoke to him while he still owned it. There is a company that makes adapters to connect any engine to any transmission. I don't recall the name of the company, but I believe it is located in California. You should be able to locate it after some searching. Also, he said that the engine mounts were fairly easy to make. One thing about the setup that I didnt like was the fact that due to the intake on that engine, the air filter was actually in the rear trunk, and he had to cut out part of the trunk for airflow. I think the most challenging part was wiring the ECM and wires in the car. But, from what I was told, the performance was unbelievable! And, it is an aluminum engine, so it wasn't too heavy.
You can still find references on the net if you search for "shotus", but most links lead to the original owners website which is now offline. If you are really interested in it, I think the new owner lives in Charoltte North Carolina, works for a tire manufacturing company, actually, here is a page with his info. www.espritregistry.com/Esprit/FactFileVINInfo.asp?vinid=111
I spoke to via email once and he offered to let me check it out when I was in the area, but I never did.

Hope this helps.

If you are considering that (BIG job) then I would take a look at a Honda F20C engine from an S2000.

Pretty light, 2 litre, 240HP, 9000rpm and still a 4-cyl engine, so should not be too hard to fit size-wise.

Would make the car perform as well as it looks

Bye, Arno.
