Electric Door Lock Upgrade???
Discussion
Hi,
It's very possible to install power door lock solenoids for your car. There are several available to choose from. You will find a selection at any Custom or Hot Rod shop as HotRodders often favor removing the exterior door handles.
You will need a fiarly strong solenoid, but these are available and you will probably have to do some DIY machining of the actuator rods of the lock itself - ie. cutting and threading the solenoid in between. Plus you'll have to run the wiring. But none of this is very difficult.
It's something on my 'To Do' list for my '85 Turbo, but due to the repair work I had to do earlier this season, the lock upgrade has to wait til next year. I have done some research and I think it'll cost < than $250. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

It is far easier than one realizes to add remote locks onto central locking device.
Many auto alarms comes with actuator ports on the alarm system.
So it locks/unlocks plus arms/disarms the alarm with one button.
On cars equiped with central locks(SE and later) that are activated when one of the locks are unlocked. An aftermarket actuator was piggybacked on the lock rod on the drivers door so no cutting was required.
When the actuator unlocks or locks the drivers door the passenger door also unlocks or locks.
The actuator that the hot rod people use instead of door handles are heavy duty because of the force needed to pop the door open, but to trigger just the lock requires much less force so you need a much more modest actuator.
Go to an auto stereo shop and ask for an alarm system that offers keyless entry and tell them you need one actuator for the driver door for SE's and newer with central locks or two actuators for earlier cars.
Some even offer a secondary actuator circuit and seperate button on the keyfob remote for a remote hatch or trunk opener.

I installed a power lock upgrade on my previous 83 turbo. I installed it at the same time as the alarm so I could have keyless entry. I purchased everything from www.crutchfield.com. If you don't have an alarm, I recommend installing one and purchase the doorlock kit so you can have keyless entry as well. Otherwise, if you just want power locks, you will need some type of switch inside to actuate the locks. There are however, kits that actuate when you move the lock lever on either door. In my case the installation was very easy. But, I used to install auto electronics for a living. Still, it isn't difficult. The only caution I can give is to lube and inspect the locking mechanism in both doors. I lubed and straightened everything I could see and still it was obvious that the selonoids were straining when operating the lock. But the angles on the 83 model may be different than your application.
From what I remember it was pretty simple to locate and attach the selonoids in the door. I guess the hardest part was feeding the wires through to the door. But still it wasn't that difficult.
Anyway, it was a very worthwhile upgrade being that it was a pain to reach across the center console to unlock the passenger door. Not to mention not having to use your key to open the door. Which in my case was an issue since on mine it was sometimes hard to get the key to turn in the door locks.
Hope this helps.

I've had Viper alarm systems fitted to each Esprit I've had.
Doors lock and unlock by remote.
Interior lights are switched on or off when you lock/unlock the car.
When you turn the ignition on, the doors automatically lock - anti 'hijacking' feature.
You can turn your engine on by remote (EFI engines only).
You can connect your windows to it so you can remotely put them down or up, and they can automatically go up when you lock the car.
Alarm TALKS when it locks/unlocks.
It has a microwave sensor, so when anyone gets close to the car (doesn't have to touch it) it tells them off (what it says varies from model to model). This feature is great when you park the car with the roof off.
All this costs less than US$500.
