Freon charging amount?
Discussion
Well this is the time of year to ask this one. How much A/C coolant does a 95 S4 take. I had my system recharged and they put in 6.25 LBS of freon or R12. I cant remember which it was but it doesn't seem to be blowing ice cold. Plus if I let it sit after getting the engine hot, it wont ever get back to that initial level of coolness. So how many pounds of the various coolants does the system take to blow cold? Cheers.
Hi,
There is an optimum amount of refrigerant to be used in any system to achieve proper efficiency. Too little or too much refrigerant and cooling efficiency will drop.
6.25lbs. seems like way too much R-12, although I'm uncertain of the spec for the S4 (service literature doesn't cover that model year), but for any of the earlier (pre-'95) models, the correct amount is more like 3.1 lbs. Your serviceman may have exscessively overfilled the system, resulting in diminished cooling efficiency. Hope this helps, Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE
