Hi all,

When i accelerate i get a 'wheezing' type noise that increase up and down with the engine tone. Is this normal, if it is, does anyone know what causes it?

Thanks in advance

Are you sure its not your stereo/radio connections? Try shutting off your stereo and see if it still makes that noise. Sometimes bad stereo connections cause a winding/weezing noise and it increases under accelaration.

The noise Mike is referring to would be alternator interferance through the stereo system which could be a possibility. If you turn the stereo off and it's still there, you could have a bad vacuum line or vacuum line check valve. On the 240 series Volvos I've worked on, I would hear this noise when the vacuum check valve coming off the manifold to feed the vacuum bladder in the car was bad. You would think from the sound it was in the cabin, but it was actually a problem
caused by a bad valve in the engine compartment.
Hope this will shed some light on your problem.

Cheers,
Robert

Thanks guys, It is actually an engine noise as i first noticed it before my radio was connected (i bought it without one), it does sound like it could be a vacuum of some kind, trouble is not being much of a mechanic im not sure what to check or where to check it.....

Thanks again

Does it start at around 2000-2500 rpm?

It sounds like it is something related to engine speed. Vacuum decreases with a heavier right foot.
Posibilities. Something in Intake tract. Exhaust system.
A fault which has just occured on my car is the non-return valve in the vacuum line which causes a pulsation in the Power brake booster. The note changes as the revs increase.
What motor specs is your car?

I can't offer much in the way of telling you exactly where to check, but I did find a simple way to try and pinpoint the locations of noises on a running engine. I simply take a piece of extra rubber hose, approx half inch diameter, hold one end up to my ear and start pointing the other end to suspected areas. I have use that several times to locate air leaks and rattles. Good luck.

Hey,

If it's an '86, why not invest in a few quid worth of vacuum hose and replace it all. Probably needs it anyway and I suspect vacuum to be the culprit. Also, how much noise does your vacuum pump make at start-up and for how long? This too may be coming to the end of it's service life. Hope this helps. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

Brett,
Throwout bearings can make funny noises, does the noise dissapear when you depress the clutch pedal?
Just another thought.

No it doesnt Robert, its deffinately an engine type noise, im going with the vacuum idea as a possibility mainly because to me it kind of sounds like the kind of noise i would imagine a dodgy vacuum to make..where or how i replace it is another matter....

cheers Robert

Brett,
A cheap item you could get is a mechanic's stethoscope at your autoparts store. It's like what doctors use with a long probe. You can hear everything with this from finding bad bearings to vacuum leaks.
I use mine all of the time in the trade as a proffesional tech.
