Does anyone have any info on what size of sub-woofer(s) can be installed in my S3?

Also where can the sub(s) be placed, The only place i can find is behind the seats, but space is limited because of the fuel tanks.

Any info on this would be great, as this is now holding up my restoration.

Hi,

I know of two subwoofer installations in the 'G' Turbo. The first was installed in the front boot, while the second was installed behind the passenger side dash once the glovebox was removed.

Considering the uni-directional character of a subwoofer, both installations had good results, but in each case, the installation was a series of compromises.

In my case, I opted for a 3-way, six speaker setup w/ a pair of 6" woofers and a pair of tweeters mounted on/in the rear cabin wall and a pair of dedicated midrange speakers mounted in the dash controlled by an adjustable crossover circuit and driven by a remote 100 Watt/channel amplifier. The car has great sound, but is no 'Ghetto Blaster' (Thank God). Besides, I rarely use it as the best music to me is the music made by the engine. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

I had an 83 Turbo and cut out the speaker holes behind the seats enough to fit a 6 1/2 woofer behind each seat. It sounded much better than before, however I believe there was enough room for a 8" in those locations. That is my plan for my 94 S4 now. I think the problem is the depth of the speakers. If needed I will fabricate some type of ring to raise the speaker a bit if there is a clearence problem.

there also has been installations of tube type subs just under the front of the passenger seat and merged into the leather seat. The problem with a larger sub is the lack of air space for the sub to work right. There is not enough air space in the enclosure behind the seat to make a nice crisp sub. It will make a muddy sub using a 8".

Much obliged,
to all who have given me ideas of what to try, i am interested in the idea of 8inch subs but like you say a ring would have to be fabricated from MDF or alike to bring the sub slightly more into the cabin rather than protruding into the fuel tank area, space is tight in there as it is!
And the subject of amount of free air is a valid point also, maybe there is no ideal solution to the problem, im just up in the air on what to do?

does anyone know any make of subs that specialize in a slimline design?
Cheers for the ideas Keep thinking, Tony.

Not sure about slim line subs, but Kicker makes the Solerbaric subs, that are designed to be used in very small enclosures. I am sure there are other manufacturers that make the same type, I just havn't been in the stereo scene recent enough to hear about them.

On my 89 SE there is two 8" subs behind the seats, these are raised out using wooden rings. Also 6" speakers in doors (also raised out with rings) plus enlarged front speakers with some kind of directional center. All of this has been done by PO and to be honest I may have in all stripped out revert to a more basic system.

I have to visit the company that installed the system due to they also did the alarm system which I have a few questions on.

Something like a Bazooka tube or a transmission line type sub mounted in the front might give you a better option for a nice tight sub.
