Type of oil for high mileage car

Hi all,

Ive just read somewhere that i shouldnt be using fully synthetic oil if my engine is high mileage (88k). Is this true? im using Mobil 1 at the moment. The car did however was almost completely rebuilt 3k miles ago...so would this also make any difference....

Brett,

It's an old wives tale about not using a synthetic oil on an older car. The reasoning is that the seals on an older car will begin to leak if you switch to a synthetic with it's lower viscosity. The truth is if you have bad seals, you have bad seals. A synthetic may start to leak earlier, but with bad seals, standard motor oil will leak there eventually too.

As far as you engine is concerned, if it went through a total rebuild 3k mi. ago, then it's virtually a new engine with 3k mi. on it, so you should have no problems at all. Stick w/ the Mobil 1. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE (w/ 45k mi. on the odo, 5k mi. on a fully rebuilt motor filled w/ mobil 1)
