Help in England
Discussion
Hi, this is my first post to this group. I have been a member of the 2 yahoo lists for a couple of years.
I will be traveling to England (from Japan) at the end of this month (first time) so asked the yahoo listers for some advice. Calvin Hamada was kind enough to refer me to this list.
My planning is almost done now but I still have some questions. The family will be looking at castles and shopping. I will be stuck behind the wheel of some road sloth and secretly trying to sneak in some Lotus content into this holiday.
My questions are;
1) How do I contact Lotus to request a tour of the factory. I have sent them an email but I didn't receive a response. I think I sent it to the wrong department. Could someone give me the correct email address or telephone number to call?
2) I want to buy some (lots) of Lotus books (new or used). Is there a particular book store that has a good selection of Lotus books?
3) Could someone tell me the best magazines with good Lotus content. I know about "Classic Cars", "Classic and sports cars", and "CAR". Are there others? I like all lotus models (except '70's Elite and Eclat...sorry).
4) Are there any Esprit parts shops or used Lotus cars shops (I want to buy parts but only look at the cars) in the Cotswolds area? Not too far away or the family will mutiny.
5) Are there any Lotus events or autojumbles happening July 25-31?
Thank you,
Terry

Esprit forum members.
We have a Yahoo Turbo Esprit list member visiting the UK. He has 2 Esprit's an S2 and a S4s.
It is a custom where Jim McFadden and I live (Minneapolis/St.Paul, Minnesota USA)to act as hosts when we have a Lotus owner visiting our town.
It would be nice if some of the Brit's on this forum were to lend this person whatever assistance he requires and hospitality the Brit's are famous for if his travels takes him near the area you call home.
I have never had a negative experience from meeting and socializing with a fellow Lotus owner.

Pop into Paul Matty's just south of Birmingham to see their "new" 1987 HC Turbo. I would love to have a look at this car, but can't afford the time out of work at the moment.
www.paulmattysportscars.co.uk/
It's not a big shop, but is usually stuffed with about 15 nice cars, including the Lotus Etna mock up.
I would guess that Matty also has all the Lotus books you could ever ask for. The parts department seems well stocked too.
I bought my Esprit from him and was impressed by his enthusiasm.
If you are visiting Paul Matty, then drop in on Westfield Sportscars, which is nearby.
Westfield make a car very similar to the Lotus Seven, powered by engines as diverse as the Honda Fireblade and Rover V8. You will get a proper tour of the factory if you visit. They used to make a brilliant Lotus Eleven replica. I think Paul Matty has one for sale at the moment.
If I was in the South, then Caterham Cars is worth a visit, if only for the good selection of lovely Sevens they usually have. I bought a new Seven from them back in 1999, after being treated to lengthy test drives in the Rover VVC and Classic versions.
I was fortunate enough to have a tour of the Lotus Factory back in 1989. Whilst it was certainly interesting, in the absence of the Esprit, I would not really be too bothered about going back, particularly as it is so isolated.
If you do go to that part of the country, then Duxford is well worth a visit. This is part of the Imperial War Museum and is dedicated to historical aircraft. There is everything from the Spitfire to the B52 bomber, via the prototype Concorde, B17 and a host of other fantastic aircraft. It is not far from Cambridge, in case you need a good excuse to visit.
By way of contrast, the National Railway Museum in York is also a fascinating day out, assuming you have any interest in railway engineering. It is also on the outskirts of an historic city, so that your fellow travellers will not be too upset if you choose to visit.
I hope this helps....

Hi Terry
I am sure your email reached the right dept. at Lotus, they are just crap at public relations, and brilliant at making enthusiasts feel like a nuisance!! I have never, ever had a satisfactory response to an enquiry, and from the many enthusiasts I meet I am not alone.
For Lotus books try Chater's who deal in new and used motor books, (www.chaters.co.uk) and of course you could also try Ebay if you like.
Cheers

Terry, check out www.seloc.org and click on the 'event' link. You have to be registered but it only take 1 min.. There is a run on 27th July.
"This event is hopefully central enough to attract Lotus owners from the south, Cotswolds, Wales, North and East Anglia. It will be advertised on www.lotusruns.co.uk, and probably start in Stamford, tour the Lincolnshire fens, then move further west, hopefully taking in a look at Rockingham, and ending somewhere special. "
cheers

I'm not sure of your timing, but here is an event you could try to get to:
---------------------
Pleased to announce that Hangar 111 have been given an opportunity to fill 35 places at Snetterton on the 24th July through Heritage Track Days Ltd. The day is split into sessions for Novice, Intermediate and Advanced drivers, so why not go along.
Price for the day is £135.00 !!!!!
Credit Card booking is possible either through the Hangar 111 mail order hotline on 01437 636961 or via the online booking page at www.hangar111.com/Snetterton.htm
There are other events in August. If you will be there in August let me know and I will advise you.
