What type of trasnsmission is in a 1988 Esprit
Discussion
Hi,
The 1988 Esprit is, for all intents and purposes, merely a 1987 Model with a different body - the Stevens body. Mechanically, the two models are 99% the same.
As such, it has the Citroen C-35 transmission. The Renault Gearbox was not introduced until the following year with the introduction of the SE model in MY 1989. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

Only US models retained the Citroen trans with the introduction of the Stevens body, everyone else got the Renault tranny. The Renault tranny was introduced in the US on the '89 GM injected cars, which predate the SE by half a year or so.

Hi Sanj,
There's an error somewhere, my source is the Esprit Fact File which lists it as being introduced in with the '89 MY model. Happy Motoring!..Jim'85TE
Hi,
What is already said is probably true for the US. In Europe, the ' 88 Stevens design esprit has got the renault trans. The change of the body implies the change of trans box.
If the gear lever is original. The citroen one is in wood and quite slim. The renault one is in black plastic with a "bulky" head and number are in red.
Have a good day and ride.

No real error per se, but the model info in the EFF is US-centric, and does not reflect the fact that most major changes to the Esprit happened a year later in the US than elsewhere. The Renault trans *was* introduced in the US with the '89 non-SE model (not with the SE as in your original post), but it was already installed in the '88 cars sold elsewhere.
Cheers,
Sanj

Sanj,
I bow to your expertise and sit corrected. Thanks! Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE (w/ Citroen C-35 gearbox - I'm certain of this!)
