Window motor removal

OK, I have read all the previous posts about replacing the window motor, but I still have questions. To start with the window will sometimes not move when the switch is pressed. I swapped switches with the passenger side and it did the same thing. So the switch is not the problem. When the window fails to move, I can still hear a click in the door as I press the switch, and if I click back and forth on the switch, the window will eventually move. I had the door panel off and I can see no way to remove just the motor. Does the whole lift mechanism need to be removed or is it possible to just remove the motor? If so, I can't see how and in the manual it says that the whole thing must be serviced as one part. Any suggestions? If I can get it out, I feel confident I can clean, and or replace parts to get it working again. If all else fails I will replace the motor. I have also seen in previous posts that the window motor is a part from a Jag or Corvette. Has anyone ACTUALLY used one of these motors? If so which one?

On the S4's it is actually more common for the relays to fail than the motors. Inside each door, there are two relays. Try swapping them. If the problem is fixed, then one of the relays was bad. You can also try whacking them gently. Really.

Thanks Sanj, I will try that. I actually thought about that, but being that it was not working in both up and down directions, I thought that was less of a possibility. But its easy to do and could save my knuckles.

Well, I bought 2 relays but they weren't the right type. So I removed the old ones and cleaned the contacts with sandpaper. I also discovered an improper fuse size (2 amp instead of 20) for the drivers side. Not sure exactly what fixed the problem but it works now. Thanks again Sanj.
