Max Boost Steven's Turbo?
Discussion
I am woundering whether I am getting full boost out of my 1989 Esprit turbo. Although the boost gauge shows 8 graduations up to 1.2 bar I know the maximum boost should be 0.65 thus equating to just over half the gauges 8 graduations my car boosts up to a max of just under half the gauges physical face. My car seems to make alot of noise through the air intake as it sucks air in the O,S,air intake. The waste gate operation and air/turbo noise is very noticable with the sun roof open or the O,S window down. The induction/breathing noises of the engine seem far louder than my HC S3 Esprit Turbo.
Has anyone experienced louder induction noise due to a leaking air intake or carb spindles etc.

Hi,
Mine makes an awful lot of noise from the air intake as well. When you have the window down you can really here it suck the air. I assume this is normal. I've just fitted a Greens cotton air filter and that has increased noise levels further. I've checked my hoses and none appear to be leaking though.

Iam not sure which dials you have but on mine o.6 is the next point past half way. How long have you owned your car for? Have you checked out what type of filter you have?
If you aren't boosting to .65 then you can adjust the actuator rod to make the rod length shorter. When you undo the lock nut, you must make sure that the rod going into the actuator doesn't rotate because it can shear the diaphram inside.
I've put an upgraded actuator on mine that's fully adjustable.
BTW mine also make a loudish sucking noise and you can hear the turbo kicking in and the wastgate operating, which all sound quite loud with the windows open.
Cheers,
Dave Walters

Mine too!! I also max boost at just over half way with plenty of heavy breathing in the process. (and as for the car LOL). I'm not sure if its abnormal but personally find it part of the appeal and prefer to drive with at least the roof open for this reason. I actually have a audio sample of mine on my site. As it was ripped from a camcorder the AGC turns it down slightly but the suction and waste gate can still be heard. Vists my site or use the following to hear it. I guess you could say its 'Max Boost Steven's Turbo'.
