is there a aftermarket REAR LOURVES for a Gcar
Discussion
Gday all
Is there a "aftermarket" ...sorry lost the word i am looking for.
Meaning that in the Gcar TURBOS they came standard with a fixed rear louve on.
Can one get a .. here i go again , a non genuine one for a norml Gcar ... did anyone make them ?
Also are they worth it?
If there are no "stick on jobs" the only other option is to get a Turbo rear door complete with lourve...thats a bit drastic though.
Also just out of curiousity ... on the Turbo Gcars... they are fixed (lourve) into the rear window.
???? how easy are they to clean ,if you cant take them out.
Sorry im having a touch of the sun .. here in Queensland Aussi..... its winter and 22C !!!!!
I wonder what the temp is in Uk ...lol lol and they are in summer !!!!
This has occured to me here .. that a lourve here is pretty well a good idea.... with the "engine in a box" and heat bearing down on it.
Thanks

I have a turbo louvre fitted to my normally aspirated S3 esprit, previous owner fitted it years ago.
Firstly,it is only the outer part that fits. This is because on the (real) turbo the lower cowl section is formed to mate up with cooling louvre on engine bay lid.
The S3 has an entirely different housing around the engine, and fitting this internal cowl would mean it would mate up with nothing inside (providing of course the lid still shuts).
Being open to the elements, carpet removal is also wise.the boot space has drainage ducts in corners should any water get in.
Lastly, and most importantly. LOOK at the workshop manual diagram for cold air induction. The car brings air into boot area via passenger side duct, then air is drawn from luggage area from internal drivers side duct, then to air box.
It appears the luggage area is one big plennum,so fitting an open grill to it is questionable.
Will it suck more in,or will you lose induction air?.
Mine goes like stink, have considered putting some ript up paper in back, then hammering it to see if its sucked out(i'm no scientist),you could of course just re-route the ducts.
Find a crashed one,get lid off it,remove cowl, spray if needed and fit.At least you still have your old one to put back on to keep it original.
good luck.

Hi,
There were two other options that I am familiar with.
1) Faux louvers. These are as the name suggests, cosmetic only. They fit over the existing glass in the hatch and do not effect air flow inside the boot.
I believe these were made by a few different vendors. I think you can even get an OEM Lotus unit for about $1,000.
2) Real Louvers S2 only. This setup consists of two pieces, a single piece louver and plenum and a small interface duct. The louver/plenum piece replaces the glass in the hatch. The plenum has a large oval hole cut in it where the interface duct attaches. The access door in the engine cover is removed and the interface duct covers the hole when the hatch is closed. When the hatch is open you still have good access to the engine via the original engine box access. the engine box can still be removed with no interference.
This design allows the S2 engine to vent in a similar way to the turbo cars without having to do major surgery in the trunk area.
Anytime you add louvers, real or faux, it has a negative impact on the rearward visibility.

Thanks guys for your relies
Heres me thinking that the lourves were purely for cosmetic reasons... er to make it look nicer...and not to make it go better !!!!!!:
Amazing what you find out on this site...
Learn something everyday .
Guess i will look out for a smashed Turbo and get the rear lid at a cheap price heh heh
Apart from that ... i will just put a heavier tint on the rear glass
Again many thanks

Pomoz,
Long time since this subject, but figured i'd tell you that (as mine is for sale) there are pictures of an S3 with turbo bits on the L.E.W for sale page now.
Note my front splitter, bonnet, air intakes and rear end/lights are as original,i have met and spoken to a guy who had his arse cut off (his car) and a doner turbo spoiler/rear light assembly put on,then had all the above changes done too...
Sounded like a load of work/cost to me,be cheaper to get turbo to start with and keep the money for when it falls to bits...
Perversly,i'm buying a turbo next.
All the best,
PAUL C
