I've had AC issues since new on my 2000 V8. However, after a couple shop visits for leaks and a bad compressor... I only had to fix 3 leaks and recharge the system :-(
Overall, not very impressed with the AC system... lots of expensive parts that perform poorly together. The manual does state that R134a systems require 2.2 pounds of refrigerant.... seems kinda low considering how much extra plumbing you have in the mid-engine layout.
Now that I've fixed the system ( both Hi and Lo valves slightly loose and the compressor manifold fitting) I can drive around (South Florida with 90+ degrees and very sunny) in a black car with black interior and glass roof with temperatures around 48 degrees from the center vents without air circulation. With air circulation on, it will go down to about 42 degrees. I've also noticed that if I put the blower fan on high (position 3) I get less cool air, so position 2 seems about best to keep adequate airflow and keep the small cabin reasonably cool.
One thing I don't quite know yet are what the average Hi and Lo pressures are suppose to be... nobody seems to know and as I had 3 leaks to find after the compressor was replaced (warranty work), it's difficult to know how much oil and refrigerant was lost. I did add another 2 ounces of oil however as the engine oil filter, oil pan and front frame section all had compressor oil about. Personally I think the system should blow colder from the vents.
Hope this helps.... can't really comment on how cold the R12 converted Esprit should be. I just don't know how many parts were swapped.
