Just wondering, if the transmission is so poor on the Esprit, what do the race teams do as they are running over 500bhp? Do they replace it with quaiffe bits?

Dakkon,

Yes, the replace the helical cut street gears w/ straight dog gears w/o synchromesh. But that isn't really the weak point, the weak point is the two unusually long, opposing internal shafts which flex under the torque and HP of the Esprit. This flexing, causes the shafts to separate allowing the gears to slip apart to the point where they can no longer stay in contact with one another, resulting in chipped teeth. A number of fixes are added to prevent/limit this flexing. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

The v8 running in the Dutch Supercar series runs a quaife. The factory GT cars ran a 6 Speed Hewland ‘TGT’ Sequential Transverse Transmission.
