Right , I`m still digging around , trying to find out exactly what my 1992 SE ( it is an SE honest ),high wing really is .

So far , the "word" back from Lotus and previous owners , is , that it was the Lotus development car for the S4 and is "believed" to have been shown at the Geneva Motor show ( which one I don`t know - presumably 1992 ).

Can anyone help clarify this ? Any pictures of the shows anywhere etc ???

Apparently the car is mechanically S4 - hence the power steering ( which is superb- I`d never go back to non assisted ), with SE body and special carbon fibre /full leather/S4 interior trim( with those unusual, but great electrical switches for opening the tailgate & bonnet - in response to a previous question ,the front switch is a solenoid type under the steering column , which operates GM type catches under the bonnet where the originals would have been).

Lotus are still trying to find out more but have confirmed the chassis number is 53 after the last SE was built ( does this mean it`s in S4 territory - can anyone confirm the S4 range ? )and that they didn`t normally retain build books for prototypes , as they were never sold as new .

So I`ll keep digging and will look forward to any replies.

Many Thanks Paul.

Hi
I remember a grainy B&W "scoop" type photo in Autocar, might still have it somewhere, but its a needle/haystack scenario.
As far as I can recall, I didn't pay too much attention at the time as it seemed like just another variation on the Stevens shape which I was not a fan of. It had the nice new bodykit of the finished S4, but was spoiled by the usual Stevens wheels and weirdo Highwing spoiler.
It was only when I saw the finished S4 with the Ferrari-esque 5 spokes and boomerang spoiler that the full revamp made me go "wow".
If I find it again I'll send you a copy.
Cheers
Mark

Thanks Mark .

My car is in white with the infamous high wing ( which is subtly toned down in this colour & I find looks a treat - & you can see perfectly out the back for a change ) but I`m not sure , yet , what wheels it had originally ( but I guess the original SEs ). It has had S4 wheels till recently , when the last owner changed them for V8s , which gives it a real Lambo look & suits that dodgy wing again .

The body externally is , still stock SE , apart from the colour coded S4 style door handles . Eventually I will organise some pictures etc....I`m still getting to know the car and it`s off to PNM this week for a full service - Peter should be able to shed some more light on it .

Anyway , please let me know if you find the picture .

Many Thanks again Paul.
