Hi all,

The handbrake on my 84 is stuck in the on position at the rear brakes. There seams to be a spring mechanism that returns the handbrake to the off position when the lever is put down, but the springs are not working and the only way to release the handbrake is to pull it off from underneath with a screwdriver. My mechanic suggested I need a new "rear caliper overhaul kit" as the problem cannot be repaired. Is this correct? Also does anyone know of the best place to buy this part and what the correct term is for it? I am in Australia, but have ordered parts from the UK before (I am not sure if this part is too heavy for reasonable freight to here).

Regards

Hi M,
The rear caliper overhaul kit is basically a new piston seal ring, some silicone and new rubber piston boot. You can get them from SJ Sportscars in the UK.

Also what can happen is that the outer part of the caliper is cast iron while the piston and cylinder are aluminium. If the piston sticks, heat builds up and warps the aluminium parts so they jam up. This can be overcome by fine machining them back to round.

It could also be the case that your handbrake cable is knackered. Some rust on the caliper can also cause the same problem.

Companies like SJ Sportscars and PNM Engineering offer an overhaul service based on an exchange part basis.
I just wonder if there's a firm in Oz that do the same kind of thing to save you shipping costs.
Sorry I can't be conclusive, but I found the overhaul kit did not solve the same problem on my 88MY X180 Turbo.
Best wishes

Hi,

Alan's correct about the rebuild kit containing no parts to 'refresh' the handbrake adjuster mechanism.

But, all is not lost until you dismantle the adjuster mechanism and clean them up and'dry' fit them back together and see if it will work. There are essentially 3 bolts to remove to get inside the adjuster and see what the problem is. Hope this helps. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

Check that it is not just your cable siezing up. Disconnect it from the cailper and make sure the cable isn't binding with the outer.

Freight shouldn't be too bad. I just got a parcel from SJSportscars, weight 1.1kg, cost 15GBP for freight and you're closer to England than me.

If you ask how much, the price he quotes includes freight.
