Hello,

I am living in the US (originally from Ilford Essex) and I am researching a 93-94 S4. Are they as unreliable as I read? How much will I spend a year in maintaining the car and fixing it? I only drive about 5000 miles a year at the most but I do want it to work for most of those miles. Any insight would be helpful

Hi,

I am origionally from England too (Nottingham). I have had my 88 Turbo for about 7 months and the only time it has been off the road is when I have had mods done. It let me down once when a hose came off the turbo intake, I was only 2 miles from home so not a big deal. I have put on over 5k miles since March.

Some people have not so good experiences but I think a lot of it is down to how you keep it maintained.

Hope this helps

Cheers,

Depends on how you drive it. Even an ordinary car would be tested by some of things an owner does to a Lotus.

I own a 94' S4, and it has been very reliable for me thus far. The fact that it has a GM fuel managment system and alot of Delco electronics, makes it about as reliable as any GM product of its era.
Of course, the manner in which you drive it will play heavily on how much down time you may see.(If you make a habit of driving it hard and putting it away wet, your asking for trouble)

Good luck in you search!

I ha an S4 for about 18months - never let me down once - apart from once which was my own fault due to a bit of dodgy soldering for my chip upgrade.
I kept on top of things and did about 16k in it - always ran fine.

Good luck in finding one.

Cheers,

JC

I have had mine for about 15 months now. It has yet to let me down. Clutch fluid level was low (normal evaporation I guess, no leaks on floor)turbo gage died and was traced to the grounding screw coming loose. I dont abuse my car and have spent $3.45 for repairs. A service was $400 with Steel clutch line replacement. Great car been more reliable than my 94 Jetta.
