I've just come back from two weeks touring the deep south.

Long straights with sweeping curves, little or no traffic, no sign of any police, perfect for the Esprit so I thought.

I was trying to get my mustang (supplied by Hertz)in the groove (didn't like the car at all) then roadworks. Ah I thought just like the UK a few cones and that will be that. A few hundred yards up the road I'm now in foot deep powered cement??? with people telling me there's only 1/4 mile or so left to go. Then after coating the car in cement it is time for the oil!!!! 5 Miles of road freshly oiled!!

Is this what you guys have to put up with? none of the oil came of the car after a car wash, I don't think hertz were too impressed either.

Lovely country and great southern hospiltality mind you.

Where in the South?

Different area of "good roads" in different States. I have driven a lot of them (not necessarily in the Esprit) in Alabama, Georgia and Florida

Any time you're in Washington state, try Forest Road 25, just east of Mt. Saint Helens from Randle to Couger. 45 miles of non-patroled pavement with your only worry being motorhomes and sightseers (looking at our used up volcano).
No cops, ever, as it's a forest service road.
Average speed at a sporting clip is prob'ly 65 MPH for me (I don't go very fast on the straights). Good pavement but has dips and sags in it and the occasional rock. Gives the Lotus suspension a good workout and would give cars with lesser suspensions fits. Good rain road too, but to lose control in a big way would put you over a tall cliff, and the Coyotes would end up gnawing on your bones.
Lots of other good roads in the area too, say, from Eagles Cliff down to Carson on the Columbia River via Wind River road.
Cheers.
