1988 turbo HC speedo question
Discussion
Hi,
I've just joined the list having bought a nice red 1988 turbo HC.
A couple of issues that need to be sorted with the car....one of them being the speedo.
Checked the cable and it's OK - basically the speedo is reading 30 mph at rest and shoots up to 140 as soon as the car is moving.
Now I know the 0-60 is fast...but hey, this is warp speed!!! LOL
Anyway - Questions
1/ What make is the speedo on this model?
2/ Anyone kow the best place for servicing/repair of the speedo in the midlands UK?
3/ How on earth do you get the thing out of the car?
I and my parner (she's smaller) have both been in the Lotus Position under the dash trying to see the gubbins without much sucess - can feel it fine and managed to dissconnect and re-connect the cable OK.
Many thanks in anticipation of any helpfull pointers.
happy driving - redhotwheels...oooh yes!

I recently had my speedo go out on me as well. I removed it, shipped it to a VDO repair shop and had it fixed and sent back within a couple of weeks. I think I paid about $80 for the repair. I imagine that it would cost about the same in the UK. As for removal, once you get the binnicle off, disconnect the cable, and the bracket on the back of the speedo as well as the dash lights for the speedo. It will probably still be very tight. There is a rubber grommet that it slides into. The best way to get it out is to let some very soapy water run down the sides of the speedo. You can do this with a drink straw or any type of tube. I used soapy water and then used some silicone like you use to make your tires shine. After a good soaking, I turned the speedo back and forth to allow the water and silcone to work its way around the grommet. Then its just a matter of twisting and pushing on the back of the speedo until you can grab the speedo from the front and pull it out. Mine was a bit difficult as there was a sticker on the speedo housing that was binding. I eventually got it out after about 20 minutes. When I put it back in, I was sure to coat the grommet with the silicone so it would go in, and come out easier.
Fortunatly these are VDO guages and can be repaired quite easily because these specific guages aren't made anymore. Good luck, hope this helps.

They sent it back to VDO for repair.
Took about a month & cost about 50 quid I think.
