My 84 TE gearbox slowly drips some oil; I have only owned the car for about a month and have not refilled the box yet; however with a warm engine, the gearbox disengages in first en reverse sometimes; I can put it back into gear directly after that. Is this a sign of a low oillevel or is something else wrong ?

Thanks in advance !

I would check the gearbox oil level immediately and top up if neccessary.
Keep an eye on it over the next few runs and depending upon your mileage see how much oil it looses.
If the gearbox is dripping oil at standstill this may be residue from it pouring out when driving and a low oil level can be disastrous to the gearbox.

The moving out of gear can be oil related at an extreme case but may be due to linkage needing adjustment. Is it jumping ut only in 1st and reverse or have you experienced it in all gears ?

Check that the linkage is pushing the actuator arms fully home. It may just be wear in the linkages. My car had selection problems when I got it due to a bend in the rod on the RHS of the gearbox.

If it still jumps out even though it is being properly selected then it is likely to be the teeth on the dog that engages those gears has been chipped through a previous owner being a bit rough with it. Recently fixed our Landrover which had precisely that problem in second gear. It is non sychro in 2nd so had been given a hiding over the years.
