finally got one!!!!!! out of a jag xj6 (8 tooth) (30 euro)
by the way they are sidless ie driver/passenger sides are the same for all those who are interested here are the jag years that fit.

the Jag XJS regulator actually fits as well sides are important here!!!!! ie jags drivers to lotus drivers etc they do not swap
The window switches are from rover for the 88-92 cars
(rover metro/100) they cost 8 euro each far cheaper that from lotus

They are not "sideless." At least not as far as the gearbox part goes. I have had both my window motors off and believe me, they are different and won't interchange. You want a left Jag motor for the right side Esprit and vice-versa. The pics on the link above just show a generic motor/gearbox assembly, not the actual left/right. Also, there are a lot of other differences too that the site doesn't show. Some have 10 teeth, some 8, some motors are fat and round, some are skinny and oval with flat sides (what we have). They fat/skinny ones _might_ be interchangeable on a Jag _if_ the gears match, but space sure is tight in the Esprit door and I would not want to try it. Much easier to just get the right part.
Jan: I picked up a spare left and right motor off of eBay. Paid U$1 for one and U$15 for the other, plus shipping. Beats the U$250 for the rebuilt out of Florida. I also bought a rebuilt motor/gearbox at the local auto parts store and pulled it apart and used the motor part with my OEM gear box part. Took a little Dremel tool time to get the plastic brush holder to fit the Lotus (English Delco actually) gearbox. I think the part I bought was for a GM truck. The brush holder was the only part I needed as mine was melted, but try to buy just that. Now I have the 2 spare Jag motors with gearboxes, so I am set for the next decade or so.
Here is my eBay search:

They come up all the time. Just make sure there are 8 teeth on the gear and you are OK.

on my particular car one motors casing was pointing (drivers)downwards and the other was pointing upwards Passanger I had actually taken my passenger side motor gear out and placed it in the drivers door (cops and driving licences, toll bridges, carparks bmw's behind you and all that etc) again pointing down wards fitted perfectly no problems. the site I directed you to this morning was for jag motors all 8 tooth which will fit the esprit if you go backwards on the site using the address bar you will see the actual motor which fit all those jag types the xjs regulator is the same for the years shown
Interesting on rotating the motors. Didn't think of that. I would suspect a PO did that for you, as mine came with a left/right, and the Florida rebuilder site lists different part numbers for left/right on Esprits. Also, as I said, while the later oval type may fit where the fat round ones went, I would not care to try the other way around. I have watched used OEM Jag window motors from parts cars for a while now on eBay, and many of the ones listed on that site are fat round ones originally from Jaguar.
One thing to consider when mounting them sideways: The motor parts were designed to be mounted vertically. Some of them have a drain hole near the bottom to let out condensation.
