Hi All

I'm trying to get a new ECM for my 89 SE. In the UK it's £700 from Lotus, Getting one from the US should cost me about £150. But I'm having some trouble...

A friend in Texas sent me this:

"Continuing on with the order process at gm-auto-parts.com shows that the $88 price is not correct. I talked with a sales agent at that site who said that GM superseded the original part number 1228707 in June 1995 with the new GM part number 16198267, which is the AC Delco part number also. Part 1228707 is no longer available.

GMPartsDirect.com has the part 1228708 (same as 1228707 but includes a weatherproof enclosure). Their price includes an estimated $22 shipping and $75 Core"

Does anyone know if the new part number will work? Or should I go for 1228708? When I get this, I just need to swap the mem-cal chip?

Any help would be apreciated!

Ask John Welch he should know. I don't usually post email addresses but since this was on John public site it should be okay.

Hi Gareth,

South West Lotus had a bunch of blank Esprit ECUs (without memcals) at the Stoneleigh Parts Fair last year for £100. I bet they still have them.

Contact details are :

1228708 will also work.
You can order direct from and they will ship to UK.

1228707 is for the non-SE '89, which I believe was only sold in the US. SE's use the 1228708, which is readily available from AC Delco/Delphi/GM dealers as a remanufactured unit. The two are not interchangeable, as they use completely different wiring connectors. If yours has four identically sized red connectors, then it uses a 1228708. If it uses three connectors of differing sizes then it is a 1228707, which should also still be available in the US.

Cheers,
Sanj

Just wanted to say thanks for everyone’s help!

I called South West Lotus Centre last Thursday, ordered (£187), and the new ECM arrived next day! 30mins after opening the box and fitting my old memcal my SE was running like a dream! No fault codes, and no problems.

In the past it has always had difficulty maintaining correct idle speed (varying from 1000 to 1700 rpm) but since Friday is been around 1000 all the time.

Very pleased!

Gareth
(with working 89 SE!)

P.S. If anyone’s interested, before I replaced the ECU I was getting the following Fault codes:

65, 41, and 24

Right at the end, I also had the cooling fans coming on as soon as the ignition was turned on.

I'm pretty sure that anytime the check engine light is triggered the ECM turns on the fans as a precaution.

Congratulations on getting the car fixed!

Cheers,
